iToo forest pack and Octane render for 3ds max
« on: September 05, 2013, 10:42:24 PM »
Hi

Two quiestions

OCTANE RENDER
I just downloaded the lite version of Forest Pack and did a quick test with 3ds max / octane render plugin.
It seems that the textures can't be converted - is this right? can't I use Forest Pack with Octane render?

CONTENT
How many models area included in forest pack pro?

Thanks :-)

1) Yes, the library materials can be converted using the Octane Material tool (Render Settings->Octane Render Settings->Material Converter). If it doesn't work, try this:

a) Select "Standard Materials" in the Library Browser. These are more suitable for Octane.
b) Don't use XRefs (objects or materials). The library browser includes a "Merge/XRef" selector.
c) Sometimes the Octane material converter doesn't pick the material from the Forest object (i don't know why). Try dragging it to the Material Editor before converting.

Forest 4.1 already includes native materials for Octane. By now this version is available only in beta for Forest Pro users. We'll release the Lite version soon.

2) You can see the models included in Forest Pro here. Additional libraries are sold separately.

Hi Carlos

Thank you for your answer.

If I purchase the pro version - does that give me instant access to the beta version?

Thanks :-)

Yes, betas are available in the Client Area. It uses the same Pro license.

Hi

I have purchased the pro version and installed the beta version.

It seems that all 3d objects works fine, when using octane render - but the textures on the 2d surfaces won't work / convert. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks - it seems like a nice tool.

Oh my - 3ds crashes a lot if I import objects from the free models an then convert materials in the octane panel :-(

I'm sorry, but there is not much that we can do about it. Perhaps you should contact directly with the Octane support.

If that helps, the library objects are standard meshes that are stored in a hidden/frozen layer (forest_templates). We provide native Octane materials for the presets, but not for the free models because they own to 3D Mentor. Anyway, these models include Standard materials that should be easily convertible to Octane (if the material converter doesn't fail, obviously).

Hi Carlos

It seems that none of the included 2d materials can be converted? :-/
Should'nt they be compatible with octane?

Really has no sense to use billboards with Octane, because this engine is mainly designed to use 3D Objects. Also, some feature as fake shadows, are not supported. Anyway, if you need them please tell me. Well prepary a library of 2D materials for Octane. Only it's necessary to remove "Forest Material" and convert the base material, which a Standard type.

On the other side, i've done some tests converting materials from the free models, and i can reproduce the problem of your previous post (i though it was crashing in the conversion process, not after it). There is a workaround:

1) Turn off Geometry->Consolidate Materials.
2) Convert materials.
3) Turn on Consolidate Materials.

This problem is already fixed for the next beta update.

Hi Carlos

I'm really a nood and I thought I needed to use 2d billboards :-)

I'll give the 3d objects a try - so no need to bother with to 2d models.

Thanks for the tip regarding converting the materials.
