3.4 Problem
« on: December 15, 2010, 04:50:34 PM »
I have a severe problem with the new 3.4 release.
I add a forest object, click spline, pick custom objects, etc...
point cloud displays fine, everything renders too...
then i right click on the viewport and the forest output disappears.
I can still activate the Forest001 object from the list, the UI is there, everything seems fine, but there are no more trees in the viewport or in the rendered output.

What is the state in General->Forest Stats window ?
Is this a random problem or can you reproduce it every time ?

Please, send us a stripped scene containing one of those Forest objects.

Hi,
I tracked it down to a missing texturemap.
I tried to pick an object from the iGrass collection with an orphaned multiscatter texture inside.

Ignore my last post, this wasn't the problem as it seems.

It was the "Limit to visibility" checkbox.
When switching from perspective to camera then everything goes away when this checkbox is activated.
Stats show N/A for tree count then.

Ok, please check the Forest Camera parameters, specifically the Far Clipping plane and Density Fallof curve. Be sure that range values are adequate to the scene's units and scale.

another (old) bug:
when the custom object is hidden on render, this only works with local rendering.
with Vray DR it is still visible on rendernodes...

Ok, we just found the problem: the spline has a negative scale applied (-100, -100, -100). It works fine scattering the items, but the camera clipping routine cannot handle the result.

Apply a Reset XForm to the spline (find it in the Utilities panel), to fix it.

Unfortunately we have not found a fix for this issue. As workaround, disable in Forest "Display->Hide Custom Objects..." checkbox, or hide the object from the render.

OK, interesting.
I generated the spline from mesh edges, maybe that's why.

Maybe there can be some warning in the stats when all trees are hidden because of cam clipping, or something.
It looks like a very nasty bug if all trees disappear suddenly.

Ok, we will include a hidden items counter in the stats.
