License Server for Linux
« on: April 11, 2018, 11:18:39 AM »
Hi,
We are debating here on the office, the possibility to change our servers to Linux, to reduce future maintenance costs. But from all the softwares that we use, ForestPro/RailClone are the only ones that have a Windows Only License Server. Is there a build for Linux? And if there for what versions (libc)?

Best regards,
Daniel Santana

Hi Daniel,

The Itoo Software License Manager software is compatible with any of Windows OS (desktop / server) versions and unfortunately it's not possible to install it on a Linux based systems (like the Synology NAS). Currently, we don't have available any version of the license server for this operating system.

Let me add, that our Itoo Software License Server can be installed on a virtual server. The only limitation is that our licensing system uses the ID of the CPU to identify the hardware. On virtualized environments, this ID may change because a different physical CPU is assigned to the virtual machine each time that it is rebooted. This issue can be solved setting the Affinity Processor, which assign always the same CPU to a specific VM. On Vmware ESX, it is defined here (Scheduling Affinity). Not sure about other virtualization systems, but should have an equivalent property.

Best regards,

Thanks, I will investigate the VM alternative, but if we change to Linux, it would be using a Linux VM native solution like KVM, that does allow to set CPU affinity.

Cheers,
Daniel
