Crashing on creating forest pack object
« on: November 04, 2014, 12:28:08 AM »
First off this seems like it's due to a heavy scene. I've tested with a fresh scene and no problem. With this particular scene there is 900,000 polys, which you might agree is not that much in todays standards.

I can try and reduce the number of polys but I wanted to make you aware of the problem. I'll send you the problem file by email.

I'll let you know here at what poly count the problem stops.

Please, send us by email the minidump. Hopefully it will give us more information about the crash.
Thanks,

Sorry, Only getting back now.. I've tried with the file before but this crash doesn't come up with that screen. I've got what I sent by email when pressing the view problems details. I've sent the output via email.

See link for problem file here: https://www.sendspace.com/file/amins3

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the testing scene. As there is actually no Forest object included, could you please comment us which release of Forest Pack are you using? Thanks in advance. Also please detail your software configuration (from your scene I guess you are using 3ds Max 2014 + Corona renderer).

I suppose you are having troubles while creating new Forest object. Could you please describe more in detail the issue? We´ll try to reproduce it here and analyse, what's causing it.

Kind regards,

The trouble is I can't create one as that is the error/trouble. It crashes. I had 2014 SP5 and the scene was a corona one. I was using ForestPackPro425 but have now updated to the latest beta build with the same problem. I had a UVW map modifier on the object. But that's not the problem. The material on the rug was a multi-subobject material and that was not the problem.

Can you try adding a forest pack to the carpet and see if you have a crash?

PS I'm not getting any email notifications for replies to this thread. I've enabled that on here at the top right hand corner.

Hi,

We have been testing your scene with the same configuration (3ds Max 2014 SP5, FP 4.2.5, Corona Alpha v7.1), but we are unable to reproduce your troubles here. As you can see on attached screenshot, we can create a Forest object using the "floor ground rug" object as a base surface.

The only strange behaviour we have noticed, that there is an unusual delay when creating the forest_templates layer (caused by 3ds Max's Merge operation). As we don't have installed some of plug-ins used in the scene (Quad Chamfer and RandomisedFaceIds), would you please test it having these temporary disabled? Thanks in advance.

Regarding the forum issue:

Our forum was moved to a new server some days ago and recently we have noticed that behaviour also. Sorry for any inconvenience caused, we are working on it.

Kind regards,

Thanks for checking this out. I've removed the furniture completely from the scene and flattened all the geometry to edit poly. Removed everything expect geometry and still having the problem.

I was using the script called sweep profile (found here: http://3d-kstudio.com/product/sweep-profile-shapes/) and found the process of merging anything into the scene was slow. I then tried normal merging and that was the same. Also I clicked new file and kept all but still no avail. Even stripped all the materials of the scene.

It's a problem perhaps with my graphics card on heavy scenes. (It's not really that bad). FYI it's a 4870 x 2 ATI Card, do you know of any problems with that? I'm thinking of upgrading to a GTX 970 or the 980ti released sometime this month.

Can you get max to crash with the scene at all?

Hi,

We have been investigating this problem and possibly it could be related to your graphic card (as you mentioned in the last post it's an ATI card). The ATI Catalyst software uses .NET framework and your issue could be related to some of its components. An option would be reinstalling the .NET framework from the Microsoft site corresponding to your Win OS version.

Also, we would suggest you to try another 3ds Max Display Driver (if you are using Nitrous, please try to switch to Legacy Direct3D or Legacy OpenGL). That could fix it.

Actually, we are unable to reproduce the crash with your scene on any of our computers.

Kind regards,

Hi, updated the .NET framework and still the lag with Direct3D and OpenGL legacy modes tried also. I left it thinking for around 30mins and it eventually created a forest object with Direct 3D.

I then deleted the forest object and it worked instantly. I done this without fail for 5 times. It's an issue merging the forest objects in initially.

There's 1 retimer in the scene I think that's causing an issue. I've used both:
http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/cleaner
http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/clean-retimers

but they cannot get rid of it. I definitely think that's the cause. I will report back if that's the case.
