ability to freeze forest part
« on: December 25, 2014, 10:49:57 PM »
Hi,
Is it somehow possible to implement the feature so I can freeze the part of the scene and use it as complete object in the other scene?
My example - I made a forest composition and I need to transfer the part of it to the other project (and I don't want to reassign all surfaces, areas, etc). Can I just kind of put selected forest objects under the dome so all  inside the dome is frozen and could be at least exported as single proxy.
Hope you understand my idea.
Regards, Den

I'm afraid it's not possible to freeze completely a Forest Object if has references to custom objects, areas or surfaces, because these are needed to rebuild the object.
But there are several procedures you can use:

1) Convert to Tree Editor->Custom Mode. In this case, areas are not longer needed, but you need to keep custom objects and surfaces, if used.
2) For small objects: Set Display->Viewport mode to Mesh and collapse to an editable mesh.
3) For medium size objects: convert Forest to stand-alone instances using Forest Tools.

I hope that helps.

Hi Carlos,
Thanks for reply.
Converting to mesh and to instances is not very quick procedure if you have colony of 5 different forests in one place.
I hoped there could be a solution.
Any possible way forest objects inside a dome to be converted to mesh or instances in 1 click ?
Or maybe that dome can behave same way as mask in photoshop - so the only inside objects are shown.

Thx.

Sorry, but i don't understand well the problem. That dome should be some type of gizmo which locks Forest items inside it ?
In any case, you can collapse several Forests with a single click (select them->right click->Convert to editable mesh).

will try to explain the other way... please see my attached example
I have 18 forests in scene
and I need to find a quick way how to convert three areas to proxy/mesh
inside each area is a mix of forests, forests are very big (estate project) - if I convert it all to mesh I will get 3-4 gigabyte scene (or I need to clean up every forest object and convert only particular part - and this is long way)

Unfortunately in Forest Pack there is not way to export only only a subset of the distribution. The most efficient solution for your case is fist reduce the distribution only to the size of the dome, and transform Forest Pack to the to mesh or proxy. This can be accomplished either editing the base area, or using the detach tool in custom edit mode.

In any case to avoid to dealing with multiple Forest objects, for most cases is recommended to use multiple geometry samples in the same Forest Object using the Gemotry List. In this way is more easier to control a mixed plant distribution, as we do in our included presets.
