particles in Alembic VRay Proxy
« on: February 05, 2020, 04:03:31 PM »
Hi,

I'm trying to replace tree models with "point cloud" like models for far views.
For this, I exported an alembic file from Houdini with only colored 3D points and imported them in 3ds Max with VRayProxy (the points are seen as particles).
The proxy alone works fine, but when I add it to Forest Pack, the points seem converted to spheres (whether I use "point" or "sphere" in VRayProxy) and I lose the color channel (whether I store them in vertex color channel or uv channel).
I don't really understand how the scattering of VRay Proxies works.

Is there a way to go around that ?

Best regards

(in order to see the colors of the attached alembic model, you have to put vertex color in diffuse map slot)

The proxy alone works fine,

We get this situation:

This fine right ?

Now scatter with forestpack:

Scattering vRay Proxies is the same as other geometry items. You just need to configure them a bit so ForestPack can display them:
Setting to BoundingBox in vRAyproxy and Pyramids in ForestPack

This GPU renderer.

I see that CPU is failing to see VertexColor map. I have reported that to our development team.

Thanks for checking.

I understood this point. What I don't understand is what's beneath. Do vRay Proxies stay vRay Proxies ? Are they merged as meshes (small spheres in this case)?

With vRay Proxies, you can choose between spheres and points for particles. Once scattered, the option doesn't work. Forest always displays spheres.

I think the channels disappeared. The problem doesn't come not from the map. The vertex color and uvs disappeared.

I think these channels are normally stored in TVerts but in case of particles, there is no TVerts, just vertices. So, for me, particles are just no more particles once scattered.

Here is what i see:

Closest "tree" is vray proxy without forestpack. Behind him ForestPack.
Comparison shows that forestpack inherits sphere/point setting.

Are you rendering in CPU ? That's not what I got (vRay Next, update 3 / CPU rendering) :

The proxy in "points" mode shows flat circles (at right)
