Title: Bacburner Server crashing with Forest Pack
Post by: TO4398 on September 24, 2017, 02:22:05 PM
Hello dear forum members and admins. I am currently working on an animation project in Corona. Got one network licence in the office and will probably have to upgrade to a second one soon since we are using it more and more.
Anyway long-story short for some reason when I send a job from the backburner server on my machine where the scene is opened with forest pack, after some time on one of the nodes the scene crashes. What is interesting is that last night I have sent the scene on to 3 nodes and on 2 it was ok but the 3rd kept crushing. I entered the scene which was already opened on my workstation trough which I send the jobs to the BB server. To my surprise I noticed that when I select a forest object it says that the license is busy or someone opened it. This already happened a few times before in several scenarios even though people just open scenes and don't even select the forest object.  I am guessing is a bug or some incompatibility with the BB server. As soon as I switched off all forest layers and sent the frames to be rendered again on the machine where it was crushing it stoped crushing and actually finished the job.

So can some1 please help? On 3 computers it renders on 2 but crashes on 1. Obviously its Forest pack causing it since on that machine when I turn it off it works just fine. Also all 3 machines are identical dual Xeon nodes with same ram quantity/cpu/identical systems... The scene is a birdseye of a beach with just 4 Forest pack layers and about 200 trees which is really light. Far away from detail complexity and quantity of scenes I am used to and worked before but never animated with forest before. Also all 4 layers have a green light. I had some problems before on a previous project and I wrote here about it, asked for help with a layer that was red and managed to solve it to be green but it was still crushing with BB server. In the end I didn't ask about it more since the project was stopped and the animation was not finished.

I don't really want to collapse all to mesh since the scene will become really heavy and don't think it is the point if I have Forest pack... Hope some1 helps, thnx in advance.

Forgot to say that I use Forest 5.3.2 it is asking me already a few weeks to upgrade but don't really have the time to do it on all machines. Also Corona render 1.5 version.

Hi, first of all, i suggest you upgrade to Forest 5.4.0.
In the lastest releases we fixed a couple of bugs related with Corona, which would be causing this issue.

Regarding the license, render nodes don't fetch a license. But workstations does it, even if Forest objects are not edited. The license is used when Forest objects are edited or rendered, from an interactive Max session.
In any case, you can see who is using the license at any given time in the License Sever ("Computers" tab).

I hope that helps.

someoen installed the software and forgot to tick render node. reinstall as render node.

Hi thnx for the quick answer. I am 100% sure that I have installed the software as render node/slave on the rendering machines and not as workstation. Will upgrade the software for sure. How do I upgrade the software on the salves just by reinstalling or?

Yes, just reinstall it normally.

By the way, currently there is not difference between installing as render node or workstation.
Basically a render node is a workstation without any license, although the setup program includes a specific option for slaves, to make the process more simple for users.
