Configure Network map locations for reg edit
« on: April 06, 2021, 04:03:04 PM »
Hey guys,

Finally getting round to updating to FP7, using the registry method from previous gens to centralise assets with our pipeline to a central network location for all workstations and slaves. There used to be this tutorial below for editing the registry keys for distribution maps etc but seems to have gone down. Are you able to provide the base regedit file again for tweaking those locations?

https://forum.itoosoft.com/forest-pro-beta/default-map-locations-when-loading-in-forest-presets/msg20819/#msg20819

Followed this previous tut for the basics but just wanting to get everything in one place for additional tweaks I make.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

Hi Matt,

I am not sure what You are asking. The topic You have linked is still working with FP7. It has sample regedit files attached.
Would You please explain Your question in a bit more details. Thanks.

Hi Rokas,

Sure thing, sorry was just to say that first link for us doesn't seem to be active anymore.

https://forum.itoosoft.com/forest-pro-beta/default-map-locations-when-loading-in-forest-presets/msg20819/#msg20819

When we try to access it I get the error 'The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you.'

I think I've managed to solve it anyway manually typing out all the extra map paths but was just trying to double check the tutorial.

Thanks

Rokas

That post is not that relevant. You can refer this post alone, don't You?

I am sorry Matthias, what exactly do You miss in this post about registry setup configuration for render machines ?

I can access that archived post and will gladly share the information You request.

Hey Rokas,

From my memory I think that missing link had a regedit in the post which contained a list of the other texture paths if we wanted all map paths under 'Configure User Paths' - 'External Files' to be pointed at a network drive location rather than local instead of just the one that's included there by default;

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Itoo Software\Forest Pack Pro\TexturePaths]
"1"="\\\\192.168.1.111\\Library\\iTooAssets\\Forest Pack Pro\\maps"

For our particular needs and quirks of the WFH situation and temporary weird configs I find it useful having everything consolidated in one place if I need to make adjustments to a map so it all rolls out globally. After setting up latest versions of FP I just copied the paths from my max.ini file to set up in the reg edit so that I could consolidate all in one go. Appreciate this isn't your standard or officially supported install method but my particular issues I've sorted as below.

Matthias,

If it's helpful, this is the list I've edited to add to automatically add the new external paths within the reg edit file, it contains all the new library map paths as well as those for the XREF presets default library workaround. I've set it up in a custom way but the end names may be useful to make sure you have them all with the latets version of FP and new stumps/hedges presets. Add your network location before the first \\ with your particular network location. I then delete the old FP related external files if any and automatically add external paths when creating a new FP object for the first time.

Disclaimer, don't mess with the registry unless you're comfortable with it. This setup works in particular for us, I'm sure Rokas or others may be able to share the old archived version if that's what you're after instead.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Itoo Software\Forest Pack Pro\TexturePaths]
"1"="\\maps"
"2"="\\distmaps\\images"
"3"="\\lib\\3d\\flowers and grass\\maps"
"4"="\\lib\\3d\\stones\\maps"
"5"="\\lib\\3d\\stumps\\maps"
"6"="\\lib\\3d\\starter library\\maps"
"7"="\\lib\\presets\\cut hedges\\maps"
"8"="\\lib\\presets\\gravel\\maps"
"9"="\\lib\\presets\\vertical\\maps"
"10"="\\lib\\presets\\layered_lawns\\maps"
"11"="\\lib\\presets\\leaves\\maps"
"12"="\\lib\\presets\\meadows\\maps"
"13"="\\lib\\presets\\mulch\\maps"
"14"="\\lib\\presets\\rugs\\maps"
"15"="\\lib\\presets\\stones\\maps"
"16"="\\lib\\presets\\stumps\\maps"
"17"="\\lib\\presets_xref\\cut hedges\\maps"
"18"="\\lib\\presets_xref\\gravel\\maps"
"19"="\\lib\\presets_xref\\vertical\\maps"
"20"="\\lib\\presets_xref\\lawns\\maps"
"28"="\\lib\\presets_xref\\layered_lawns\\maps"
"29"="\\lib\\presets_xref\\leaves\\maps"
"30"="\\lib\\presets_xref\\mulch\\maps"
"31"="\\lib\\presets_xref\\rugs\\maps"
"32"="\\lib\\presets_xref\\stones\\maps"
"33"="\\lib\\presets_xref\\stumps\\maps"

Thanks,
Matt

Thank You OC1963 for explanation.

Yes, hidden post had a small sample start snippet:
Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Itoo Software\Forest Pack Pro\TexturePaths]
"1"="\\myserver\\assets\ForestPack\\maps"
"2"="\\myserver\\assets\ForestPack\\lib\\Presets\\Layered_Lawns\\maps"
"3"="\\myserver\\assets\ForestPack\\lib\\Presets\\Vertical\\maps"

And You shared a full solution! I hope Your post can be beneficial for users wanting advanced setup, as Yours.
Cheers for sharing.
Rokas

I have followed this guide:
https://forum.itoosoft.com/faq/installing-forestpack-6-assets-in-a-shared-network-path/
and I can now see the new paths in the registry and also from the plugin libraries.

However when I download the packages in update manager.exe they are downloaded and installed in:
“C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Itoo Software\Forest Pack Pro”

I was expecting them to download to the temp folder and extract to the new shared path.

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Many thanks,
Olly

UPDATE:

Based on your guide I am using the all users registry setup:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Itoo Software\Forest Pack Pro\LibraryDir]
"Forest Library"="D:\\Itoosoft\\Shared Assets\\ForestPackPro\\lib"

However I notice that on my workstation (the pc running update manager) there is an old current user key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Itoo Software\Forest Pack Pro\LibraryDir]
"Forest Library"="C:\\Users\\<USERNAME>\\AppData\\Local\\Itoo Software\\Forest Pack Pro\\lib"

As I understand it the HKLM keys should take precedence over the HKCU key, yet update manager is extracting packages to the path stored in the HKCU key.
If I open Forest Pack Pro library > prefs in max the C:\users path is listed.

The environment I am trying to configure has had many previous versions of Itoosoft plugins installed.
I notice there are many old obsolete paths listed in:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Itoo Software\Forest Pack Pro\TexturePaths]
These repeatedly get added to 3dsmax.ini when auto configuring paths after installing Forest Pack.

Any pointers really appreciated!

Thanks
Olly
