Converting base geo to proxy after forest pack creation
« on: March 30, 2025, 10:26:12 pm »
I have quite a few Forest objects in my scene, they were setup initially using standard edit mesh/poly base geometry.  However if I convert said base geometry to proxy the Forest objects lose the links to the custom objects despite the name of the custom object not changing?

So the workflow is basically this.

Merge "MaxtreeBush001", create Forest Object, add "Maxtreebush001" to custom geometry list, all works fine.  Convert "Maxtreebush001" to Corona Proxy using Corona Proxy Exporter.  Make sure "Replace Source Object" is checked.  Forest Pack disappears.  "Maxtreebush001" is still listed in the Forest Object but where the name of the custom object is usually displayed it now says "None"

Is this expected?

Hi,

Can you please specify the versions of 3ds Max, Forest Pack, and Corona you’re using? I just ran a quick test with the Corona Proxy Exporter using the Replace Source Object option, and the item remains linked to the Forest object.

Let me mention, that generally, we suggest using poly or mesh models. Internally Forest converts all items to native instances of the render engine, so it's as efficient as using proxies. You can find a detailed technical explanation here. Also, using XRefs would be recommendable in many situations. Please feel free to check this "Best Workflow for a very large scene with Forest!" post, where you can find some more tips for dealing with heavy objects/scenes. I hope you'll find it interesting.

Thanks in advance for any further insights you can share with us or the user community, in case others encounter similar issues.

Best regards,

Interesting, I'm having to use proxies purely to keep file sizes down and avoid any issues when using DR with Corona.  Do your links with Forest Objects still remain if using the Sini Software Ignite Springboard to convert them?

I used the Corona Proxy Exporter, which comes bundled with the Corona renderer. I haven't tested it with the mentioned IgNite Springboard, as I don't have access to it. Thanks for your understanding.

Best regards,
