Title: corrupt file
Post by: Kai on September 19, 2013, 08:52:41 PM
I have a file that has become corrupted some how. I have deleted everything from the file and created a new forest object but it is still not being created correctly. As a test, I created a circle to use as a shape for a forest object. When I create the forest object by clicking on the circle, the trees pop up somewhere outside the circle. Any help diagnosing this problem would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Kai

The template objects in this scene are modified, probably because they were moved or merged from other scenes. Please, try this:

1) Reset Max and create a default Forest object.
2) Delete it. If you check the layers, there is a hidden layer named "forest_templates". The templates are stored here.
3) Merge all items from the original scene, except the "_forest_template" objects.

Thankyou Carlos! I'll be more careful when merging forest objects.

What about templates from the HQ plant library? will they also corrupt a file if they are moved or merged?

That depends of what modification is done to the objects. As instance, if they are scaled, that will affect to all Forest objects that use them.

There is nothing special with the templates layer, only is the place where Forest stores the library custom objects and billboards. Same problem may happen modifying custom objects created by the user.

Carlos, I followed your suggestion but am still having trouble with my original file. Maybe there is something else besides the templates? Anyway, the file will crash if I merge other objects into it, or even try to exit from it. I removed the 3d trees I had been using but left the billboard trees. Could you examine the file and see if you find anything?

I got no crashes, but the scene responds very slowly to certain operations (as saving or reset). I'm checking it, please hold on.

There is something strange on this scene, but it's not Forest related: if i merge any object (as a spline) to an empty scene, i can reproduce the slowdown problem. I previously uninstalled Forest just to be sure.

How to fix it: export the scene to an older Max format (as Max 2011 using 2014). That seems to solve the problem.

I shouldn't have used the word "crash". What happens is that max becomes unresponsive until I force it to shutdown. Thank you for the tip to save as a previous version! I've been testing it this morning and it seems to be working! You are a genius! I can't tell you how frustrated I've been trying to make this file work. I have several other files that have been giving me trouble in max 2014. I have a good feeling that this tip will solve these problems as well.

Thanks!
Kai

Thanks for your cumpliments  :). In cases such this, i usually try merging each one of the objects in an empty scene to find the culprit. Strangely, all objects of this scene trigger the problem, even a simple spline. Probably Max 2014 added some extra stuff to them.

Would be interesting to send to Autodesk one of that objects. It would be some 2014 bug behind the problem.
