Title: Crash of 3ds max 2023 scene.
Post by: KN1988 on January 15, 2024, 05:23:46 PM
Hi,

I have a very large scene.
It was working on Friday. Send files to backburner and it rendered test images without a problem. Now when i want to open the scene it crashes.
I tried;
- using the file that was send to Backburner (the .zip file from the manager)
- renamed the 2 large xref scenes to make sure those weren't the problem
- Merging from couple of things from the old file; max gives "obsolete data format found please resave the file"

I get below errors.... seems like a forest pack problem. I also have several effects I use in the forest pack objects.
I hope you guys can help me. I'm not looking forward to merging everything into a new file.....

Tricky part; in 2 days I need to finish...

Thanks and best regards,
Teun

Hi Teun,

I'm sorry to hear that you're facing these troubles. Could you please save and send us (http://forum.itoosoft.com/index.php?topic=3648.0) the minidump file of the crash (https://forum.itoosoft.com/index.php?topic=1484.0)? Hopefully, it will point to the source of the problem. Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Hope this helps.

I'm now merging everything into a new scene.
- Found a forestpack distribution of a corona light (sphere) that coused realy slow performance. That could be the problem (if so; I've fixed it).
- I can already exclude all the railclone objects.
- I can already merge everything except for 9 forest pack objects. Save the file and open it without problems.

My best guess is that the problem was aither the forest pack lights, or one of the 9 remaining objects. Thay also have effects, so I think that might cause some problems.

I'll try to import 4. If they don't have the problem, then it must be the 5 others. etc till I find the problem Forest pack.
The dificuty is that I can import everything. But when I save and open, it crashes the new imported scene.

I hope you can see something in the dump files.

The minidump file is too big. How should I send that?

Is there a way to disable forest pack so that I can remove the forest pack object that gives the problem?
Then re-save the scene and afterwards activate forest pack again?

You can use the free option of Smash. Its like WeTransfer without the 2GB limit.

According to the minidump, one of the Forest objects is failing to load a reference used in Areas.
It seems as the referenced node exists in the scene, but it's returning an invalid object.

Checking the data, the FP object seems to be "FP Grass Gardens", and the referenced object "RC Paden achter 02".

I hope that helps to isolate it.

By the way, i suggest to upgrade Max 2023 to the latest update.
The data stored in the minidump indicates you have not any service pack installed.

Probably that is not related with this issue, but would cause other problems.

Thanks!!!! You are my hero.
I can now solve this.

Thanks thanks thanks. You don't know how happy you make me with this.

For the future+ is there a way for me to read and find the problems myself?

No, sorry. I had to use a debugger, to check the data stored in the minidump. It only can be done at iToo Software, with the Forest source code.

This error is very unusual, because it should not exist nodes in ths scene with invalid references as this.
To know what happened exactly, we should need to open the scene with the debugger, and trace Forest to the crash point.

To save yourself time in another time, just save more often(incremental), like crazy   :), SSD nowadays is cheap, relatively, so better to change ssd than waste time troubleshooting bugs and glitches. And do not forget to backup ENU folder(latest) of 3ds max, it too can save a lot of time in cases when 3ds max corrupted for some reason.
