Trial version of Octane Render crashes with Forest Pack Pro
« on: March 04, 2013, 07:33:02 PM »
I am using HQ plants.
Here is an outline of what happens:
1) I have a new scene where I imported my REVIT model and added materials. Works great!
2) I add HQ grass through Forest Pack. The Max Design window shows the new geometry. The Octane window does not show the new geometry.
3) When I select "reload geometry" from the Octane window, Max Design crashes.

Am I missing something?
Thanks,
Brian

A helpful Octane user shared this with me:

"Yes I guess Octane tries to import the models as an XREF Object which is not supported. Turn the ref into a editable poly and add materials to it. Then it should work. I had the same issue with one of their free plants which come with FPP."

I wanted to share this information, and I welcome any additional suggestions!

We just tested here the trial version and works fine. In this case, merging HQ Grass in the scene (not XRef).

There is a problem in the library browser of FP 4.0.1, which ignores the "Merge" mode and imports the 3D items as XRef. Please, be sure you merge them to the scene before using Octane.

Thanks! I read through posts and I did 'merge scenes' and I have success. However, without fail, if I use the command 'reload render geometry' from the OctaneRender viewport, Max crashes. Did you attempt that command? Thanks again!

I can confirm that trial crashes clicking the update button, but the commercial version works fine. They are different versions (1.0 beta 3.03 vs 1.11), so probably the problem was solved by the Octane guys.

Good to know! I was hoping that was the case!

Thanks again for the help! I may buy Octane.
MATERIALS: We need to manually change the materials over to Octane materials, correct? What is the best method. (Could you please outline the steps for an inexperienced Max Design user?)
Thanks again!!

Yes, it's necessary to create specific materials for Octane. Neither our models, or third-party libraries include materials for it yet.

I know that Octane includes a conversion material tool, but unfortunately our experience with this engine is very limited. We only have created a couple of test scenes. Probably you will get more experienced help in their forum.
