Preparing geometry - "Transforming vertices"
« on: October 28, 2009, 11:54:45 AM »
Hellou,
when rendering dense FP ( 16x20km  @ 6.1M trees in area ) the "transform vertices" phase takes a lot of time each frame. If the density of FP is lowered, then that transformation phase is of course quicker, but what interests me, is why this pass is not multi-threaded. It`s the FP limitation, or 3ds max ?

In the current beta, multi-threading is disabled for some processes in the rendering phase. We are working to fix this issue for the final release.

However, there are some processes that cannot be multi-threaded, because limitations of 3ds max and VRay.

I see,
could you please share more details about when will be final release released? Also, the speed improvements in multithreaded procesess would be noticeable significantly ?

We are not going to add new options to the current beta version (except support for VRay SP4), so as soon as the plugin be stable and free of bugs, it will be released as Forest 3.3. I don't know if will be more betas after 3.2.9b... that depends of the number of fixes needed.

You can test the speed improvement of multi-threading modifying the "CPU Threads" parameter in the General rollout, from "Auto" to 0. Use the "Forest Stats" window to compare the processing times.

We tested the hyperthreading ability as you described, but, it seems there isn`t any noticeable improvements, in which scenario should it be faster ? Also what about the new VR SP4 - what will be different in FP when using SP4 ?

Did you get the same values modifying the threads value from 0 to Auto ?  That's strange. We get an improvement of 50% in build time for our scenes. It must work for all types of distributions, getting better values when increasing the complexity of the distribution (using Maps,  falloffs, clustering and so). But remember that with the current version you only will notice the improvement in the viewport, not in the render.

There will not differences of using Forest with VRay SP4, but we must to recompile our libraries to support it.

Hi,
I thought that would be also speedup in rendering, in viewport there is speedup.

That's it the problem that we want to fix. But we are optimitist, with the latest changes we have noticed a great speed improvement. We continue working on it...

That`s amazing, hope to see it soon working.

The new version 3.2.10b is available to download. We have implemented multithreading at render time, and fixed a bug that was limiting the creation speed. Please, test it and comment here the results.

Hi,
first initial tests shows about 20% of speedup, but as our machines are busy at rendering atm, I can`t do more intese testing.
