Distant plants too bright and wrong color
« on: July 25, 2017, 09:30:54 PM »
I'm seeing an issue I've never had before. I have 3 custom plant model in a Forest Pack object and they look fine up close. But from a distance the color and density is whitish and grayish. I thought maybe it was reflections so I removed all reflectivity from all maps in the textures. Still have the issue.

I'm trying to get a nice green over the whole field of corn. I have no transparency or any other texture settings that differ from a standard Corona texture.

Anyone know what causes this or how to modify it?

Hi,

It's hard to say just from provided image what might be causing it. If possible, please send us the problematic scene to analyse it here. Also please specify used Forest Pack / 3ds Max / renderer versions. Thanks in advance.

Best regadrs,

Ok, but I want to try a few more things before I bother you. I'll get back to you it I don't solve it. If someone had said, "yea, just turn on ...xxxx..." then it would have been solved. It's not always that easy, right?

Hi Moderator. I mistakenly have this in RailClone. It should be in Forest Pack Pro. Can you move it?

I have a quick question, and then perhaps a suggestion:

Are the leaves of the plants dependant on alpha channels for their shape? If they are, it could be to do with an antialiasing setting on your transparency? It could be to do with the way it calculates the transparency?

just a thought

Hi,

Thanks for the provided scene. Such behaviour is related to assigned material (please feel free to do a quick test using Forest Tools and export all scattered geometry to instances. You can find it under Utilities - More ... - Forest Tools. For more information about it, check our on-line reference guide. This way you can check that the problem happens during Forest object conversion or not - in this case discard the influence of our plug-in).

Setting the Alpha Source for used .tga textures to None (Opaque) should help.

I would suggest you, as I'm not Corona experts, to check / ask on the Corona forum. Many of their members are experienced users of Forest Pack, and they can suggest you other useful settings.

Best regards,

Hi,

Disabling the texture filtering (for these textures or globally for the whole scene under Development/Experimental Stuff) should fix it too.

Best regards,

Hi guys. These are all great suggestions. I'll try them all as soon as I get in this morning. I really appreciate the input. I have a deadline and I hope this gets me further down the road.

My workaround was to just assign a green noisy texture. It works OK for really distant views but it's not good for medium distance views. Really close up is fine and the texture looked normal. But once I got even a few meters away from the camera, the problem appeared.

I hope your input solves it for me. Again, much appreciated.

That was it. Changing the 'Alpha Source' and 'Filtering' settings did it. Actually, the 'Alpha Source' alone solved it but the plants were a little dark. Once I changed 'Filtering' they brightened up a little bit. I do know about and have used both of the parameters above. I was attacking the issue from another direction and sort of overlooked them. I need to be better about just changing everything a little more aggressively.

I haven't figured out where 'Development/Experimental' is yet but I'll research that too. But for now I'm back on schedule.

Thanks very much guys. I really appreciate this.
