Edge Boundary checking on Surface Area

FP 5.1 Vray 3.3.04 - I'm making a lawn with source grass objects as Edit Mesh, set the Boundary mode to edge but it's not being clipped at render time on a Surface area set to XY. If I use a flat spline area instead it seems to work. Now that I think about it I suppose as a workaround i can recreate the area as a spline only and then usethe actual surface obj as just a surface instead of surface area - but wanted to confirm this was a bug or does edge not work with surface areas (or perhaps I vray 3.4?).

Ah, just found this post - http://forum.itoosoft.com/index.php?topic=2732.0 I didn't realize that is how edges on surface area is working, sounds like best practice will be to just do the custom workaround so we really know what the spline is doing.
