Hi all,

I have updated to the latest version itoo (4-3.6), don´t work de option "edge" fron area panel.

I need to deliver a job soon.

Any help?

I use Max 2014 and arion beta 3.04.

Hi,

Actually, the new Edge Boundary Checking mode can be used just with V-Ray renderer. As mentioned in our on-line reference guide (http://docs.itoosoft.com/display/FORESTPACK/Areas#Areas-Topreventscattereditemsfrom%22leaking%22outsideanareaperimeter):

"For V-Ray users, set Boundary Check mode to Edge.

For all other renderers, set Boundary Check mode to Size. To create large areas with well defined boundaries, please refer to the Grass Edges (http://www.itoosoft.com/tutorials/tutorial_grass_edges.php) tutorial."

The option "size", don´t work, do the same with "point".

Please check your Geometry->Collision radius. Size edge mode is affected by this parameter, it's default value should be 100%.

If that doesn't fix the problem, please send us a simplified scene to support@itoosoft.com. We'll check it.

Thanks for the file. We've found two problems in your scene:

1) The pivot of the grass clumps are not centered. To fix it, just select all custom objects and use: Pivot->Affect Pivot Only->Center to Object and Align to World.
2) It's not possible to get a valid border from the surface, which is required to use the Size boundary mode. You can see this issue described in the FAQ (http://forum.itoosoft.com/index.php?topic=2732.0).

Hi,
Is it possible 'edge' mode work with spline area also ?
Now I need to make boolean cut from original terrain to use edge feature...

Yes, in fact i suggest to use spline areas when possible. They are more efficient and support all features.

For crying out loud, edge mode doesn't work in Metal Ray? why not?

You can't keep failing to support the free, built in renderer that ships with Max.

What is the reason for this? Why are Mental Ray users paying for features we don't get?

when you advertised features in your videos you really need to have warnings that flash up stating that it is only supported by Vray.

You've advertised a feature that only one rendered can use.

It's not our intention to provide less support to our Mental Ray customers.

The reasons to implement this feature only for V-Ray are exclusively technical: Edge mode works at render time, removing elements which are outside of the scatter area. Therefore, it requires to implement a custom shader with certain capabilities, but actually only V-Ray allows that.

Regarding advertisement, i apologize if you upgraded or purchased Forest 4.3 with the intention to use Edge mode in Mental Ray, but this limitation was specified in the Forest 4.3 demo reel, the documentation and the Edge mode tutorial.
