Title: edit multiple tree geometry objects?
Post by: simmsimaging on April 14, 2011, 06:51:49 PM
Is it possible to select and edit multiple geometry objects at once? I can only seem to select one at a time. It would be good to be able to edit parameters for multiples, but also to be able to select more than one for deletion as well.

thanks/b

No, the geometry list doesn't support multi selection. We have plans to rewrite this interface, as soon as we complete other improvements that are pending.

Okay thanks.  On a similar note then: is it possible to have different Transform settings for the various geometry objects in a FPP object?  It doesn't seem possible, and I'm trying to figure out workarounds for not being able to use multiple FPP objects (because they  don't affect each other's collisions, I need to have them all in one FPP)

No, the Transform settings are unique for the object. Regarding the collisions issue, the exclusion splines or even a custom distribution map would work depending of the job. What type of scene are you creating ?

I'm setting up condensation droplets on a soda can for a Coke job. I've done this with VrayScatter in the past and am trying to convert my workflow to FPP.

I have 10-12 droplets that I want to freely rotate in 360 degrees (on z -axis), another 10-12 that can only rotate maybe 10 degrees because they "hang" with gravity. I need them all scattered randomly on the can, but need to be able to quickly generate new random patterns, so painting a distribution map didn't seem like a good way to go. I also need to be able to show the client a range of options on density, so that would entail many different maps.

Any tips?

It would work cloning the first set of droplets, and rotating their pivot to create several variations rotated at different angles (to get may be 40 or 50 items in total). Then, applying in Forest a random rotation of -10/+10 degrees should be enough to simulate 360 degrees of rotation for those items.

If you need to modify the properties of the geometry list massively (when it includes a lot of items), it can be done easily using Maxscript. Ask me if you need some samples.

Thanks, that is what I have been doing as a workaround this afternoon :) It works but it means a lot more bits and pieces to potentially lose track of, and more to edit one at a time in the list... It works though.

Thanks for the offer of some maxscript samples but I have no maxscript ability at all, so that's not a good solution for me unfortunately.

Once you have collision between FPP objects it will all be much simpler, hopefully that will not be too far off :)
