error with network rendering fp3 and max 2009
« on: June 12, 2008, 12:13:11 AM »
I seem to be running into this error with max 2009 and backburner & FP3

"Cannot connect to license server (winsocks error 11004)
The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found."

FP3 works excellent with max 2008 and backburner, but since installing
max 2009 and the FP3 for max 2009 it hasn't worked?  Any thoughts?

(Note, our machines are running on windows 64, as are all the max installs & fp3
installs)

Did you get this error on a slave render computer or editing the scene on a workstation ?

We have seen this problem before, on some networks that have not configured a name server (DNS). Without a DNS, Windows tries to locate the computers using some ports that may be closed by the firewall.

Please try this:

On the license server:

1) Disable the Firewall
2) If you don't want to disable the Firewall completeley, in the "Exceptions" rules enable the checkbox "File and Printer Sharing"

On the workstations:

3) Edit the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and add a line with the address and name of your server.

Hi, thanks for the speedy response,
This error occurs on the slave render machines.
I tried inserting that into the host file on all the machines but
the error still occurs.  I also checked with our IT guy and he said there is no windows firewall on the
license server

Agreed. Then must be other problem, not related with the firewall.

The slave nodes must not request any license. We are trying to reproduce the error in our renderfarm, i will write to you as soon we find the problem.

Can you give some details about how have you installed Forest on the renderfarm ?

On the renderfarm we had Max 2008 and forestpro 3 initially,
then I just switched over to max 2009 and installed that on all our machines.
Afterwards I just reinstalled fp3 with the max 2009 option, choosing network license
option and letting it find the license server automatically.

I will try to retrace the steps again and give you more details.

Well, we have found the problem. Autodesk have introduced some changes in Max 2009, that affects how Forest detects when it's rendering on a slave node (that must not request a license).

We will fix this issue on Forest 3.02 beta, that will be released before the next Monday.
