Title: Everything has gone upside down!
Post by: Doug Gann on February 25, 2011, 06:35:53 PM
Hi.   I've been working with forest and a surface mesh  for quite a while & everything has been pretty much perfect.   However, today, after installing the 3ds Max 11 64 bit service pack, all of my billboards now affix themselves to the bottom side of the terrain mesh.

I've tried collapsing all the modifiers on the mesh, removing and then re-assigning the surface within Forest, but still no luck.

Any clues or hints as to how to flip these wayward instances back up above ground will be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Doug Gann.

Please, try to apply an Reset XForm (Find it in the Utilities panel), and/or a Normal modifier (flip normals).

If this doesn't works, delete all non-essential objects and send us the scene to support@itoosoft.com to check it.

Thanks, I've sent the mesh.

Resetting the Xform and flipping the normals had no effect.  I deleted the surface mesh and and merged-in a copy of the same mesh from an earlier iteration that did not exhibit the upside down plant problem, but once I had imported the mesh and attached the existing forest objects to it, the only display upside down.

Ok, we just found the problem. The template objects used by Forest to create the billboards were modified. Please, try this:

- Open the Layer Manager, and disable "Hide" and "Freeze" checkboxes of the layer "forest_templates"
- Select all "_forest_template" objects from the scene (use "Select by Name" tool)
- Delete the selected objects
- Save the scene, reset and reload
- Select a Forest object and modify some parameter to force a rebuild

You only need to do this for one of the Forest objects, because the templates are shared by all of them.

Brilliant!

Many thanks for your help, I pretty much rely on Forest Pro for so much these days.

Best Wishes
