Hi

I'm trying to create something similar to the attached - I have the individual rocks and the surface working fine - I just can't get them to pack as tightly as they are in the example image without overlapping etc, as soon as I enable collisions they go super spread out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

This is a rather tricky style to create with not interpenetration at all, because really to recreate that you would need a packing algorithm. You might be able to get close by using collisions and adjusting the Collision Radius.

Another approach that might yield more accurate results would be to use RailClone and create several variations of interlocking tetris-like blocks. Yeh the collision radius simply won't allow me to get as close as i need to.

I'll give rail clone a shot - failing that it's gonna be a painstaking hand painted photography/texture job :)

On a different note - is it possible to use one forest pack as a mask for another forest pack?  i.e. 1 forest pack with large items, 1 forest pack with small items and only have the small items scatter where there are spaces between large objects of the first FP?

Absolutely. Just use add the Forest Object to the areas list. There's a small tree button specifically for that purpose. You can choose whether to exclude geometry using a simplified sphere or using the actual geometry. There are also settings allowing you to increase the resolution for more accurate collision detection and scale the collision volume.

You also can find useful this video (https://youtu.be/J1SG8xQLU7M), which shows how to use this technique. It's from an old Forest version, but applicable yet.

Awesome - amazing what you don't know until you need to know - and I consider myself 'well-versed' with Forest Pack haha, never even noticed that button.
