Hi Mike,
To work with
interactive Max sessions
the license needs to be assigned to that computer - our licensing system is very similar to the "3ds Max licensing system" - it's detecting when is working in the interactive mode, so the license is needed and when not. For example, when I´ll want to open any 3ds Max scene just to render without any edition of its content, the 3ds Max will ask for the license to launch itself. There is an exception while using network rendering so the 3ds Max session is not interactive and managed by the host. The same behavior maintains our software.
We usually recommend having as many seats as the number of
concurrent users will have to work with scenes
containing Forest / RailClone object(s). The license is
not assigned by opening 3ds max or any scene which doesn't include any Forest / RailClone object. Once anyone opens a scene with some Forest object(s), the license is automatically assigned to that computer. The license handling process is fully automatic - the license is sent when needed and released to the "free & available" status when not in use - that happens shortly after closing the 3ds Max (within seconds) / scene with Forest / RailClone objects (within minutes).
If you want to
exclude specific workstations from getting a license from the server, you can change them temporarily to the "
Stand-alone mode". This way is possible to
define easily the workstations that will use the available licenses.
If the license is needed or not, depends on the way how the rendering is handled - with a license (workstation) - you can work in "interactive" mode (create, edit, render) x without a license (render slave) - you can work in "non-interactive" mode (rendering
assigned by service - backburner, distributed rendering or batch rendering -
this service needs to be launched on a computer with a license. Therefore, just for rendering purposes, you'll not need to have the license assigned to such a computer. If you don't want to take care of any network rendering settings, the batch rendering could be also a good option for you - just
prepare the batch file and render it in "non-interactive" mode.
Please note, that we offer an unlimited number of render nodes. You can compare yourself with other packages (renderer engines or other plug-ins) if this is generous enough or not (most of them are charging also by each render node offering some volume discounts). Thanks for your comprehension.
I hope that helps.
Best regards,
