Title: Forest 3.9.5 and Max 2014 viewport disaster
Post by: karresenbrands on July 11, 2013, 03:29:29 PM
Hi

I'm working on a scene with some 15 forest objects and I'm having major issues with viewport performance.
All forest objects use custom 3D objects like grass and trees.
I've set all forest objects to display as billboards, before I used points-cloud.
When I jump from frame 0 to 1200 max completely freezes and becomes unresponsive to a point that I've to restart.
I've removed all other unnecessary objects from my scene.
Could this be an issue between forest 3.9.5 and max 2014?

I suggest you upgrade to the latest Forest 4 version. Forest 3.9.5 is not tested with Max 2014, besides we have included many fixes since then.

Ok, I've got the newest version installed.
Still the same problem, this is really a very big issue.
I can't modify my animation... I'm stuck >:(

Please, send us the scene to support@itoosoft.com. We'll check it.

I'll do, it's going to be a wetransfer max zip archive.
I won't send the xrefs, they are not relevant.

Some extra information on my workstation:
dual xeon E5530@2.4ghz, 24GB RAM, SSD hdd, GF GTX 670
Max 2014 x64 SP1, forest 4.0.3
using nitrous dx11, but I've also tried the other display modes, same result.

Thanks for the file, we are checking it.

Meanwhile, you can lock all Forest objects using "Display->Freeze All...". That will help you to continue working with the scene.

It taked a while but we finally found the problem: the ProOptimizer modifier you use in the XFrog trees is updating continuously the mesh, and sending notifications to Forest. Therefore, Forest goes in a loop rebuilding its internal data and slowing down the scene.

Just collapse these trees to editable mesh to fix the problem.
