Title: forest 3
Post by: DK6550 on June 20, 2008, 05:33:15 PM
Hi, I just installed the latest forest 3 and have been playing with it to get acquainted with everything. I LOVE the ablity to view 3d objects as single planes. This is an enormous help when navigating around.
But...so far i've crashed it once and on another occasion, had it not render the objects that are displayed ...so i'm trying to see where the problems lie...such as user error (me) or forest weakness. As i get them isolated i'll post the problems ...but for what it is worth...when everything is ironed out this pluging will save me enormous time...just as it has done in the past when i used its planes. I look forward to using it. I'm using it in max 2008 64 bit.
Thanks.

First thing i notice is that when doing a custom edit tree placement, when i replace the default planes with a custom object (sphere), the spheres come in at a ratio of the default size 2 to 3 and refuse to accept the object size when i select the "use object dimensions" box. When i add a custom object, it refuses to display. I have played with the probablilities slider but it made no difference.

What i'm finding is that the "custom edit" places the planes down at whatever the setting for size is at time of placement but you cannot change the size in the edit panel. That's a problem. is there some setting or button i'm not seeing?

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to reply your questions:

If you don't get trees on render, use the "Forest Stats" dialog to see the problem. Probably, the object exceeded some maximum value (number of trees, faces...). About the crash, if you can reproduce the problem, please post here. We have worked very hard to make the plugin stable in all conditions... but it includes thousands of new source code lines as well.  :o

You are right, i just done some tests and it's a bug. As workaround, set the size of the object in the Geometry List  before create trees. For the existing items, you can use "Randomize Geometry" with the "Reset size" checkbox enabled. We will fix it on Forest 3.03.

Sorry, i don't understand this...

Thanks for the replys. I'll respond to the last reply that you siad wasn't understandable.

When placing planes down in the scene using the custom edit setting, after placing them, when i go to the modify panel and try to alter the size of the planes, they do not change. they are stuck at whatever size was set at the time of creation....and as far as your second response....which is to know what the correct setting is for an exiting object before creation....um that might be very difficult because it's all relative and i always need to tweak settings after the fact to get things to look correct relative to other objects.

And as for the crash...i'll try and post when it happens again.
Thanks

Where are you modifying the size of planes ? In Custom Edition mode, the size defined on the Geometry List is used only for new planes.

For existing planes, you must:

- Open "Tree Edition" rollout
- Activate the sub-object level using the Modify Stack Display on the Modify panel, or by clicking the small tree icon
- Select the trees you want to modify
- Set the new values on "Properties (selection)" parameters

If you want to set size to the default value specified on the Geom.List, use "Randomize Geometry" with "Reset Size" checkbox enabled (only in Forest 3.01 or greater).

Probably, for Forest 3.03 we will change the "Randomize Geometry" button + "Reset Size" checkbox, by two buttons to make these actions separately.
