Vray Proxies = Unlimited Light cache
« on: April 15, 2020, 08:08:17 PM »
Hi everyone,

So I wanted to use Forest Pro to populate a building I was working on with Offices. I followed this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UguYoEs7umQ&t=267s.

Everything in it works well until I go to render. The Vray light cache goes to infinity and never ends, HOWEVER this happens usually on the second render, the first time it might work but after that it breaks. I cannot stop VRay and I have to force quit MAX altogether.

The render settings are set to their default state.

I'm using a vray proxy as the object to populate in my scene.

I've re-created this error in the scene found here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/npc5mat9jpt77fv/ForestPro%20Test.rar?dl=0

Some simple planes, a single forest pro object and a proxy. Then a daylight system and camera for rendering.

My only guess is that the materials themselves might be the issue with the proxy.

I've tested this on two different PC's with the same error.

Information that might be needed:

PC 1

V-Ray Version: V-Ray 3.70.01
Forest Pro Version: 6.2.4

PC
Processor:Intel(R) Xeon(R) W-2123 CPU @ 3.60GHz
Video Card: NVIDIA Quadro P2000
RAM:16 GB
Operating System:Windows 10

PC 2

V-Ray Version: V-Ray Next, update 3 (4.30.00 build 000001)
Forest Pro Version: 6.2.2

PC
Processor:Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Video Card: NVIDIA Quadro K2000
RAM:16 GB
Operating System:Windows 10

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi
I have tested Your provided software versions (Max 2020) but could not reproduce the issue.

Code: [Select]
PC 1

V-Ray Version: V-Ray 3.70.01
Forest Pro Version: 6.2.4
Code: [Select]
PC 2

V-Ray Version: V-Ray Next, update 3 (4.30.00 build 000001)
Forest Pro Version: 6.2.2

May You please test the scene again, but instead of forestpack object, try to use ForestTools to instantiate the scattered items to instances.

Also it is always recommended to use latest software versions for both vray and ForestPack.

Hi Rokas,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunate that the same result did not occur.

Let me try with Forest Tools and I'll get back to you ASAP. Some work to do today but I'm sure I'll find the time

Thanks.

Hi Rokas,

That seems to be working perfectly.

Just a side question in doing this method:

You kind of destroy the functionality and are set in stone then. So I should only do this if I'm happy with the result. Kind of like a final result.

Thanks.

OK, it seems like ForestPack issue then. Too bad I can't reproduce it here.
Make sure this happens with latest ForestPack v6.2.4 ?

It did not freeze for me nor on 1st nor on 2nd or 3rd try...

I'll try it with the latest version of Forest Pro but it will be an older version of V-Ray as our company hasn't upgraded to the latest version.

The latest Forest Pro seems to be working with The Forest Tools Technique. Tested a good few times on PC2

As for using Forest Pro 6.2.4 itself on PC1:
It now works in Max 2021 after converting the file.

However now my Max 2020 is crashing anytime I open VRay. This happened last time I tried to use Forest pro to instance my geometry a few weeks ago. I had to completely re-install Max and V-Ray.

Since It's now working with 2021 and the forest Tools I think I can work with this.

If it fails with instanced proxies then it is not ForestPack issue, but vRay.
You should contact chaos group in that case. Once You instanciate- using forestTools- then it is the same as if no ForestPack is installed in Your system.

Thanks for your help Rokas.

You're probably right with it being a problem with V-Ray but I'll keep experimenting and see If i can find the root cause of it.
