3ds max 2017 hangs with Forest Pack + Indirect Diffuse (GI)
« on: September 15, 2017, 10:00:10 AM »
My system is an HP Workstation XW6400 (2006 year)
Inside I have two dual core Xeon and in the next
days I will upgrade them into two quad core Xeon.
I have 16Gb RAM, a hard disk 550Gb SSD and
a Nvidia Quadro K420 2G RAM.

I installed 3ds max 2017 and I use the latest version of
Mental Ray ver 3.14.1.4 and latest version of Forest Pack.

When I render a scene with Final Gather there are
no problems.
But when I disable Final Gather and enable the
Indirect Diffuse (GI), then when I render with
all forest pack objects in the scene, 3ds max hungs and
closes.
When I render without forest packs, then my
render is functioning perfectly.

The only way to render normally with all my forest packs and
Indirect Diffuse enabled is that in Sampling quality->sampling mode
I choose "Classic Raytraced" instead of "Unified Raytraced" but
this gets all my renders a lot darker...

Any help please...

Hi,

Thanks for the email. It could be a simple case of maxing out the memory. When it crashes, could you send the minidump file to support@itoosoft.com? It will help us isolate the cause of the crash. You can see how to find the minidump file here - https://forum.itoosoft.com/faq/getting-the-max-minidump-file/msg5316/#msg5316.

All the best,

Maybe, but seems that Forest Pack don't work
well with Mental Ray 3.14 and the new features.

The program renders flawlessly with forest pack and
the "old" Final Gather mode.

All the problems begin with the new Indirect diffuse and
Unified sampling quality.

I figured out to render my trees, but when I put a grass
template, boom don't render at all or crush...

I will send you the minidump file...

iToo has probably the best support & community i know !!

I'm using it with Max 2019 & Vray 6

Personally I found my solution: I changed to arnold wich is 2234872394872 times better than mr.
Of course there are other problems using arnold: you have to convert everything
into mesh and change the materials, but in 3ds max 2019 compatibility issues will end as far as I read...

Ok - thanks for the quick response. I'm thinking about switching from the "living-dead-renderer" mentalray to vray anyway.

Never used arnold, still working with 2015 + mr ... so 2234872394872 times better, guess it's worth a try? So in 2019 i can use mental materials with arnold?

Trust me, worth it.
I first used arnold past October in the office I work now with a lot
of risk, because it was un urgent 3D I had to deliver.

I didn't have the chance to test it at my home, because my computer
didn't support it.

So I took a big breath and tried it.
Guess what, even if I was an arnold noob that time, the
results were awesome and a lot quicker than the "living dead" (lol) mr.

If you know well Mental Ray you can easily make the transition.
Personally Autodesk with Arnold has eliminated the gap from vray.

Arnold is one word: magic.

*Mental ray materials are fully compatible with Arnold.
We are waiting the new version of Forest Pack that support 100% Arnold
without the need of converting materials ecc
