forest color map and vray proxy problem
« on: April 28, 2021, 03:33:59 PM »
Thanks for any help in advance guys!

I have been doing some testing with tree leaves and using the forest color map to plugin different leaves. This works great if you have the mesh model but seems to fail under Vray proxies. The mesh model when plugged into the forest pack controller works fine and you can see different shades of leaves, unfortunately if you plug in a vray proxy (same materials) the leaves are ignored and each tree randomnly chooses only one leaf.

This is a slight pain (guess this is a Vray issue, similar to the problem when using displacement under proxies gets ignored) as you can only test the leaf colours under the proxy scattered object, to get this working one would have to go into each model and alter the materials and also test under the forest scatter.

Hope this is clear, will use the workaround for now.

Cheers,

Jason

Hi Jason

It is proxy limitation, ( not really a vRay issue ). I would recommend using xrefs most of the times. You get benefits of all the ForestPack features (such as tint by element and Edge mode) and reduced file size.
Hope this topic can be beneficial.

This is what I do not understand from Your post. You can't test leaf colors under Proxy scattered object.

Hi Rokas,

Really appreciate the prompt response, thanks for clearing the proxy issue up, as you say they have limitations.

As you point out you can't test the leaf colours under proxies, just a misunderstanding on the post.

The only small thing is to be able to test the leaves you have to plug the model into a forest pack scatter (for the map to work), so in each tree model file you have to create a fp scatter, a sun, a ground plane, test it, then delete the objects so as not to bloat the xref. The forest colour map doesn't render unless plugged into this method. I'm using Vray Next and maybe this isn't an issure with Vray 5?

Thanks again,

Jason

Hi Jason

So as I understand- You are creating some tree library which You will later use in the projects? Right ?
Then sure- Your method seems correct. These steps what You should do. I don't see any "issue" with that. v-Ray 5 works the same way.

Hi Rokas,

Thanks for the reply again.

I have a setup where I have a lot of 3d models of trees each in their own file.

If I wish to apply a forest color map to the leaves in these files to help with realism, I can only see the result if I plug the tree into a FP scatter item. In the original 3d model file I will expect to see nothing changed in the render as the forest color map only works within the FP scattered items?

Hope that's clear?

Apologies if I'm missing something!

Thanks again,

Jason

As You said, Forest color map only works within the FP scattered items.
That is correct. That is also the same regardless which v-Ray version You are using.
To be exact- forest Color in Element mode. Item mode works outside ForestPack since FP7.
