Hedges from the tutorial, in the library
« on: September 14, 2017, 03:20:09 PM »
Hi,

I couldn't find this mentioned anywhere else so I thought I'd post it:

I ran through the tutorial on how to make hedges and successfully made a very nice hedge. I created a forest library item and pointed it to the forest hedge object. I opened a scene that I want to put hedges in and apply the library preset to the object in my project, but it doesn't look like the one I made just earlier! I have a little dig around and discover that some of the settings, although definitely there in the master scene, and therefore should transfer through the library, they just don't come in to the project scene.

The only thing to note is that I created the forest master in Max 2016 and then the project is in Max 2017, but I wouldn't have thought that mattered as it's just internal forest settings that are lost.

Can anyone shed any light on the subject?

Cheers,

Bill

When using a surface, I would suggest you to always double check its local transforms as by linking to any "scaled surface" Forest will inherit this scale (and that's not always desirable). I'm not sure, if that might be related to your problem.

I suppose, you're not referring to the "legacy" Presets option in General tab - in newer versions of Forest Pack we recommend to use Library for saving your presets as it's much more flexible option (actually, this older preset roll-out we maintain just for compatibility reasons).

That's really strange, all Forest values should be imported. Did you find any particular values missing? Would you mind to send us these files? Thanks in advance.

Hi Michal,

The problem is specifically with the settings in the "Surface" section of forest pack. Basically I have a base object with nicely mapped UVs, I select the forest object from the library and apply it to the base object, but the scattered objects only appear on the top surface of the base object. In the "Surface section, the mode has defaulted back to XY instead of UV and the direction has defaulted back to UP instead of the 50% that your tutorial suggests.

When using a surface, I would suggest you to always double check its local transforms as by linking to any "scaled surface" Forest will inherit this scale (and that's not always desirable). I'm not sure, if that might be related to your problem.
The surface I made started as a box that was the correct overall dimensions, the bottom was removed, the edges chamfered, and the whole thing subdivided.

I'll get the library object file and a basic "project" hedge file together and send it to you. I don't use the "legacy" presets option in the general tab, although I have considered it as a fix for this problem!

I hope this makes sense.

It's all with Forest 5.4.0

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Thanks for provided files. Currently, because of the "surface replacement" during the import process, these values aren't transferred. We'll evaluate how these will be handled in future releases.

Let me add, that you might find useful the following simple "Surface Assignment" script for quick base surface reassignment. Big thanks for your feedback, it's very important to us. Have a nice weekend.

Best regards,
