Forest Lag Issue
« on: March 06, 2013, 11:23:56 PM »
I'm having a problem with forest pack pro giving me quite a bit of lag time between when I select it and how long it takes to become active. Here's a video of the problem.
https://vimeo.com/tvaarchitects/review/61219717/813d6bec20

I posted on this problem a year ago or so, but abandoned it because while it was annoying,  I could still work around it. Recently our firm is working on an animation and we are using lots of forest objects, and it's becoming problematic. While the video shows about 5 seconds of lag time, the animation file is more like 10 seconds. My system Runs  Windows 7 64 pro, 24 gigs of memory, a GTX660 TI, Samsung SSD and has dual Xeon 5650's. The other machine that is licensed for forest runs Windows 7 64 pro, 16 gigs of memory, a GTX 580, Samsung SSD and a Intel core i7-3770k. Both machines are experiencing this problem, as well as every other computer that we have tried. We have a network license, I'm not sure if that matters, but our network is very fast. Any help would be appreciated. Forest is such a great plugin.

Thanks.

Yes, i remember this case. Unfortunately we could not find the cause of the problem. I think is not a network issue, but a display problem, because in the video is clearly visible how Max redraws (slowly) each control in the rollout. Anyway, you would try installing Forest Lite (which doesn't use license) to check if there is some difference.

If this is a display problem, there is not much that we can do, because the rollouts and controls are handled directly by Max. We use mainly Quadro cards here, but i will ask to our collaborators that use GTX cards.

I think you already tried it, but how does it work using Direct3D instead Nitrous ? Do you have installed some software that would affect the display performance ?

I'll try installing the lite version. I just recently installed the GTX card, prior to that I was using a Quadro 4000, and was having the same issue. I've tried using Direct3d to no avail and this was also happening when we were running max 2012. I'll post back if the Lite version works.

Thanks

This is really a strange issue. I asked to some of our collaborators who have other hardware configurations, and they have not this problem.

Besides testing the Lite version, please do this:

- Download the Process Explorer tool from here: http://technet.microsoft.com/es-es/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
- Run it and export the list of running process, using File->Save as
- Send us the file to support@itoosoft.com.

I want check if there is some process that would be causing a display slowdowness.

Finally we could to reproduce this problem. It happens when there is some graphical Java application running in background.

We detected this problem using Freemind (a tool written in Java). For some reason, Max controls are drawn much more slower when this application is running. This issue is more noticeable in Forest because it uses many rollouts with multiple controls.

Please, check your background applications. Close each one of them sequentially and check if something changes.
