mentalray materials
« on: June 29, 2015, 04:27:43 PM »
hello.  often i find myself

1. turning off translucency
2. setting material to thin-walled
3. re-locking (turning off) the translucent shadow shader in the mentalray arch&design material's mentalray connection

i do this on some pre-set grasses and meadows from the library.

i find this can significantly decrease render times without much of a quality hit because i'm not doing close up views.

is there a place i can edit the mentalray materials globally so that the next time i create a meadow from the library the materials have those options turned off already?  it would save me time from having to go through the multi-materials (often 40-50 of them) one by one and making sure those three things are set.

thanks,
steve

Hi Steve,

All materials used in our presets are stored by default at:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Itoo Software\Forest Pack Pro\matlib

In case of mental ray materials, the proper library files is the 3d_mental.mat.

Please feel free to modify these materials (material libraries) to suite best your needs. Just take in mind, all these presets / material libraries will be overwritten when upgrading. Therefore I would suggest you to create your own "personalized copy" of bundled libraries and do those material changes on there.

Let me mention, that we recently published a "Creating Libraries" tutorial covering this topic in detail. You might find it interesting.

Best regards,
