vray material displacement in forest not rendering
« on: June 08, 2016, 09:37:58 AM »
I saw a post related to this from 2013
from what I can see, this has never been fixed ?

A coworker asked, so I tried.
When rendering a forest where the object has a vray material with displacement in it,
the displacement won't get rendered ... :(

Is there any specific reason this still doesn't work ?
or is it a case of it's never going to work so best forget about it.

No, i'm afraid this limitation cannot be solved, due to the nature of VRay displacement: since surface computed at render time, Forest cannot use it to scatter the items.

Anyway, we've included a workaround in our last Effects tutorials. It uses a different approach, applying Z offset directly from the map. You can find it here.

I hope that helps.

I think we're talking about different things ...

I believe you are talking about a surface with displacement where forest can't scatter it's objects on.

I'm talking about the 'to be scattered objects' that have displacement in their material.

Ah, ok... sorry for the misunderstanding. :)

That's other of the unsolvable problems, but in this case due to V-Ray, because instanced items don't support displacement.

Unfortunately we cannot do anything about it, but in case that ChaosGroup fix this limitation some day, probably it will be fixed in Forest automatically.
