Title: forest pro attributes greyed out
Post by: DK6550 on September 26, 2011, 10:32:35 PM
I created a file filled with forest objects, many using splines for areas. The forest objects are populated with standard 2d forest billboards. Everything is fine. I then saved out that file as a new version and went in to the new version to modify materials and sizes of the billboards. The materials display correctly but when i resize them in the geometry panel,  the 2d billboards do not respond to the new dimensions. They stay at the old dimensions. When i go to the distribution map, everything is greyed out, i can make no changes. What am i missing or doing wrong?
Thanks,
mh

You probably inadvertently changed the object to "Custom Edit" mode. Please, check the "Tree Editor" rollout, the default mode should be "Generate", which enables the distribution map and splines.

Well, you are half correct. All twelve forest objects were set to custom edit, which i did not do. What this means is that when you save a file, that has forest objects in it, out to a new file, it locks all the forest objects up to custom edit mode. Unchecking that mode means i lose all settings, like surfaces it should be attahced to, splines that define the area, etc. This is a problem. How do i get around this? I don't really want to have to go in and redo everything each time i save a file out as a new file.

I have to correct myself. You are 100% correct. I did leave a number of forest objects in custom edit mode. They were forest objects comprised of hundreds of hand placed tree billboards. They have no spline area becasue of that. When i go back to generate mode, i lose all the hand placement that took so long to do. Any suggestions on how to get them to not lose that placement while upgrading their sizes and materials?

The properties of each model, including its material and default size, are defined in the Geometry List. You can modify it even in Custom Edit mode.

If you change the size in the Geometry List, the existing items are not updated automatically. You must select them from the Tree Editor and click the "Reset Size" button.

Alternatively, if you want to resize only some selected items (without modifying the Geometry List), select them and set the Width/Height properties in the Tree Editor.
