Title: Forest Pro making GrowFX Trees Update
Post by: SR1351 on January 30, 2022, 06:48:02 PM
We have an issue, we thought it was GrowFX but turns out to be Forest Pro Issue.  We have many heavy animated GrowFX trees set to manual update in our scene. When we load a max file with them they all load really fast.  But when those trees are linked to a Forest Pro scatter, every time we open a scene Forest Pro makes the trees all update on loading the scene, which a lot of times crashes the scene on loading.  Forest Pro is definitely the culprit and I don't know why it makes GrowFX trees update even though "manual update" is checked in GrowFX.  Is there a way to stop this?  It's becoming impossible to open our scenes.

Thanks for contacting us with this issue.

I'm afraid that Forest Pack does require GrowFX to generate a mesh because it requires geometry to work (for example to extract size, build viewport previews  etc). Forest Pack always calls the function GetRenderMesh for objects for this purpose.

That said, I have been able to identify an issue that causes Max to freeze when adding GrowFX meshes that have auto-update disabled and are currently not generating a mesh to Forestpack. Our development team are looking into this and hopefully when fixed it will stop the crashing issues you are experiencing.

I hope that helps.

Thank you for the help! If GrowFX is already a built mesh with Manual Update checked, it's essentially already a mesh that Forest Pro would need, So why would it need GrowFX to auto-update again every time?

In my tests, the trouble was that GrowFX with Manual Update checked does not generate a mesh when opening the file. It was just the icon. To get a mesh I had to click to build it manually (or add it to FP in which case it built automatically).

I'm not a growFX expert but I believe it has a caching feature. Could this be used to work around the issue?

Best,
Paul

You are right, I see what you mean, they don't come in built.  I'll talk to Exlevel and see what they can do then since it seems it's on there side.  Caching creates trees up to 100GB per tree for us, that's not really a good option. Leaving it a GrowFX tree with animation is very small in space.
