forest pro slow scattering simple boxes
« on: April 10, 2021, 10:43:55 PM »
Hi,

Is it possible to achieve Lee Griggs Xgen cubes effect without the file turn in a slog fest ?

Reference: https://leegriggs.com/xgen-rendered-with-arnold-for-maya

In my experience forest pro gets my file super slow even scattering a simple box.
And i can't achieve the amount of boxes that Lee gets with XGEN.
If you notice Bertrand Benoit in his test didn't got near the amount of geometry that Lee got.

Probably if i brute force it i can get more detail but i need to keep the scene light for animation propose.

The plan that I'm populating is 20 x 16 meters and the box that I'm scattering measure  0.01x0.01 meters

My specs:

Corsair Obsidian 750D Airflow Edition
Seasonic PRIME 750W Platinum
ASUS PRIME-X399-A
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X
Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER
Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000 4x16GB
Samsung 970 Pro NVMe PCIe M.2 512GB
WD Blue 1TB (2012)

Glorious GMMK RED Switch
Logitech G502 HERO
HyperX Cloud II
Logitech C922
HyperX Solocast

LG 34UC79G-B
BenQ EW2740L

Hi.
Do You want to render all those 320 million items at once in one shot? My 64GB PC struggles to do that, but I can render closeups when removing out of camera items.
Even though simple box is instanced 320M times, renderer still need to interpret each of their location, transformation, and we run out of RAM because of that.

For those closeups You could use a complex tree geometry, if You wanted.

We do have a video tutorial about scattering large amounts of trees on a terrain.

Hope this helps.
