Forestpack & 3ds max 2016 slower?
« on: November 05, 2015, 11:10:32 AM »
Hi,

I was just wondering if more people working with 3ds max 2016 & forest pack having more issues then working with previous versions?

Since i moved from 2014 to 2016 i feel forestpack is slower, crashes more often, long loading times etc.
I cannot really pinpoint the overall laggnes  problem, but my experience this morning was;
- make a plane & select it
- click make Forestpack Pro --> hanging 5 seconds, menu is disappearing/black
- select plane to place forestpack
- go to library
- use meadow (from vizpark) loads for about ten seconds
- make second forestpack on same plane --> loads for a 30 seconds
- load from library --> meadow 2 (vizpark) keeps loading 99% processor
i have to close max.

I have reproduced the problem twice.

So this could be something with using the library.
But my experience since 2016 is not really good, also with the first lagg when just selecting forestpack.

I'm using;
Vray 3.20.03
forest pro 4.4.1

edit; just made a new forestpack, select from library, meadow 2, 3ds max crash
Forestpack library is working so far.

Hi,

Up to now we don't have any similar issue reported. Following described steps we can't reproduce your troubles here (I've just tried it with VIZPARK's Flower Meadow 2 - part 1/5 - 5/5 on 3ds Max 2016 SP1, Forest Pack Pro 4.4.1, V-Ray 3.20.03 and all works smoothly).

In case, 3ds Max crashes, would you please save and send us the minidump file of the crash? (You can get the minidump clicking "View report details->View report contents", checking the path of the "3dsmax_minidump.dmp" file and making a copy of it, before closing the 3ds Max Error Report window). Hopefully, it'll point to the problem source. Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

I will try to reproduce it, and send the minidump.

--> I've send to support.

Thanks for the minidump. It seems crash happens in one of the Max functions used to merge XRef entities into the scene. Forest use it to import the library items (first the object is imported as a XRef and next it is merged).

We don't know if this is caused by a Max 2016 bug or Forest has some effect on it. We'll do more tests, but until we could not reproduce this issue in a consistent way.

One more thing: i see in your screenshot that the Vizpark library is stored in a network path. Would you test it copying and using the library locally ?

Thanks.

Sure.
I can just copy the Vizpark library to C: and add it in the existing library?

I just tried and it works.
Any ideas why its not working from the nas?

Or is there a easy workflow to work locally and textures distributed to other computers.

The procedure you follow is correct: just add the network path in the configuration of the Library Browse and use it. I tested it with our nas and everything seems correct, no lags or crashes.

But for some reason Max 2016 is causing problems with your network.
I would suggest you do some tests with the nas, as load or XRef scenes. Just to check if the problem happens only with Forest or is a general issue.
