forests disappearing from the viewport
« on: December 18, 2013, 03:32:55 PM »
Hey everyone,

since the latest forestpack update I have a problem with my forests in the viewport. They suddenly start to disappear from the viewport; only the small orange crosses are still visible. The forests still exist and I can also modify them (although I can only select them via list menue), they are also shown correctly in the output render but in the viewport I dont see a thing anymore. When hitting the update button in the display rollout, the forests appear in the viewport for 1 second, then disappear again. That makes it impossible to adjust them correctly.

Is there anything I am missing or is that a bug?

Greetings  :)

Does Forest Stats show any error ? What Display mode do you use ? Have you tried other display modes ?

If that helps, this issue has not been reported by other users. There are not know bugs that would cause this problem either.

I figured out, that the forests disappear as soon as I open the render viewport (octane) and sometimes they reappear when the render viewport is closed, but not always.

They are invisible no matter which display mode i use.

Forest stats doesn't show any error message.

Ok, it seems a specific problem with Octane. A similar issue was solved some time ago by the Otoy team.

Please, tell me your Octane and Max versions. We'll make some tests here.

I cannot reproduce the problem here, using same versions. Please, try this:

1) Open the attached scene.
2) Open the octane render viewport. Does Forest object dissapear ?
3) Close viewport. Does Forest appear again ?
4) Send us the file c:\forestDebug.log, which is created in the process.

Thx for your efforts. I tested your scene and the forests do not disappear in there, neither with opening nor closing the render viewport...but they still do in some of my scenes (not in all of them). I tried to reproduce the error myself in new scenes, but didnt manage to do so.

I didn't manage to find the file c:\forestDebug.log. Where exactly should it be stored?

I tested several previous versions of octane and FP in different combinations now to see if the issue is version-related but I didnt figure it out. The forests disappear also with older versions of octane and FP. I never noticed that problem before, that's why I thought it had shown up with the newest versions.

I found out that the forest can be manually updated as soon as the rendering is paused or the render viewport is closed. It disappears again if the rendering is resumed but I can work with that.

The debug log is generated only with the test scene. It's modified specifically for that.

Unfortunately this type of problems with Octane are not easy to fix, since one part of the code was written by Otoy (we cannot see it). So we need to reproduce the problem here, and then report the issue to them.

Is the debug-file stored in any case or only if there is an error occuring (because I don't manage to find it on my pc)?

I will go on trying on that problem. If I find out anything else than what I already wrote here, I will let you know.

It should be generated always with the test scene. It lists the functions invoked by Octane to the Forest interface.
