FP Error on Loading
« on: July 03, 2007, 03:29:47 PM »
MAX9_32 FP 2.31 (hmmm I think there is a newer version... I'll have to try this).  This is more of a heads up as I can't reproduce it and can't share the problem file unfortunately.

I was working on a project yesterday and all seemed fine.  The project contained a FP with about 800000 trees which were 2 plane trees.  When I tried to open the file this morning, before it finished the error window popped up.  "An error has occurred... would you like to attempt to save file?"  Yes... save failed, etc.

I was pretty sure this might be related to FP so I tried merging all but the FP stuff into a new file.  This worked.  Then I reset MAX and tried merging in just the FP stuff and this worked.  So it was definitely FP related.

Just thought I would mention it.

Thanks!
Sincerely,

Mike Truly

I should also mention that the layer that FP was on was set to 'Display as Box' and the FP objects were set to use 'By Layer'.  Don't know if this is relevant.

Thanks!

OK, I installed FP 2.33 but the same error occurred.  I was able to work around the problem by merging.

Thanks!

Hi Mike,

This type of error doesn't give much information about the problem. Usually we use a Max debug build to load corrupted scenes... if you like send us the file for checking (although it must be a very large file, i believe).

Carlos,  thanks for the offer.  I can't really share the file and it is large (about 48 megs).

Thanks!

Carlos,  OK I've got a little more info.

Attached is a zipfile containing a MAX9_32 file with ForestPro objects and their splines.   When you open the file, you will see the FP and splines properly displayed.

When I try to merge all objects in this file into a new file, the splines disappear.  I can't make them display no matter what I do.  They seem to still be there because the FP has the spline shape and you can select the splines via the layer dialog.  But they do not show up in the Selection Floater or in the viewports.

If I get rid of the FP objects entirely and try to merge just the splines into a new MAX9_32 scene, they also come in as invisible.

Have you ever seen anything like this before?  The splines seem to be corrupt somehow.  Originally, the splines and the FP objects resided in one layer.  This layer was set to 'Display as Box'.  The splines and FP objects were set to 'By Layer'.  Perhaps this corrupted the splines somehow?

Thanks!

OK, I solved the problem although I'm not sure why it happened.

To solve it, I simply created a new spline in the viewport.  Instantly, the invisible splines displayed as desired.

My guess is that since this was in a layer that was set to 'Display as Box', these splines somehow were made invisible.  Strange.

Thanks!

It turns out the the Display tab had been somehow set to 'Hide Shapes'.  I never set it and never even use the Display tab anymore.  Oh well.

Thanks!
