Title: Grass presets taking longer to render
Post by: amitgedia on September 11, 2019, 11:40:59 AM
Hi,
Recently i tried to use the grass presets in one of my projects and the entire image took 6.5 hrs to render at 1536 x 921 and without the grass preset it takes 2 hrs to render.

So I tried to optimize the grass material through FPP tab ( Materials - optimize materials) and still it didnt make any difference

So my question is why is it taking so long to render, is it because of the hdri lighting or my vray settings or what

attaching the file that contains just the surface and the scattered FPP Grass preset (this also took 30 mins to render at same settings)

Hope Rokas or Paul or some genius helps out

here is the link for the file to download

thanks in advance

details : 3dsmax 2017, Vray Next update 2, FPP 6.2.2
hardware : Asus rampage V extreme, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, Asus Geforce GTX 1070 -08G Graphic Card

Hi

thanks for scene. I can't find any anomalies in the scene. It renders under 8mins for me.
Of course it is always possible to speed up vray to complete renders faster. One needs to have main subject in the scene(probably that is not grass) to adjust render settings.

Hi Rokas,
Any changes you made in the render settings or did you use IPR render or normal bucket rendering, can you just enlighten me a bit

Thanks

strange..
then what might be causing the high render times, you have my vray settings setup already, or is it my system or something else

Hard to tell from one scene not knowing other data to compare to.

Hi Rokas,
here is the wetransfer link

if there are any files missing let me know i will send them (3dsmax archive did not work so had to manually create a folder and copy paste the files so there might or might not be a missing file )

thanks

Thanks for file.

I could not render the scene at all until deteted collapsed high poly RailClone objects.
After that i started to render the scene. it estimated to render in ~2hours. I think that is normal rendertime for such scene with a lot of translucent grass.

HI Rokas,

Thanks for checking the scene, that means that i need to optimize my scene more for it to render quicker.

But still the question remains for the 1st file that i sent you which took you 8 mins to render and for me it took 20 mins, so is it the system configuration difference between yours and mine or something else, do i need to tweak my hardware / software ?

Thanks again

My PC renders Corona Scene in 1:17 = 77sec.
Yours. 0:03:13 = 193 sec

Difference is 2.5 times. So Your 20mins vs 8 on my checks out.

Hi Rokas,
A quick update with my scene

i deleted all the forest objects and the forest templates, didnt touch the heavy collapsed RC objects and anything else, rebuild the new forest objects again and rendered, the timings jumped down to 1hr 20 mins, so i am feeling a bit relaxed now

I have no idea whatsoever was causing the problem, but it got solved

Thanks for the help once again.

Now a quick question, can i apply an overall forest gradient color to the grass preset or should i have to optimize the grass preset and then to individual map slot i have to change the diffuse color slot which has forest color already applied to it...

Thanks in advance
