Title: Green wall render speed optimizing with Corona
Post by: Cristero on November 27, 2017, 10:57:11 PM
Hi guys, I wrote in the Corona forum as well in search for help to cut down render times on an interior set that features a green wall taken from your tutorial.
Basically I converted your vray green wall tutorial scene to a Corona one, created 2 presets, one for a big wall, one for a small wall and then optimized all the materials to work with Corona 1.7. I added a forest edge node to the opacity maps, to be able to use it in edge mode, and removed the filtering from the opacity maps to speed it up.
Without the green wall, I get an estimated render time of 2 hours and 40, with it 21 hours (10 times more).
I've attached some screenshots for you to have a look. If it's not enough, I will still be able to send the scene over.

I removed the edge mode from the areas rollout, set it to point, and removed all the forest edge maps from the opacity slot.
Render times got cut in a half. The problem is that I need it in order for the vegetation to get scattered precisely on the wall. Any suggestion?

Anyone from you Itoo guys that can help me with that?

Apologies for the delay in replying. We had many pending cases these days because Black Friday sales.

Our team is doing tests with several versions of Corona, to see if there is some difference. We'll post here our results as soon as possible.
Anyway, i must say that unfortunately we have no control over the rendering process, or check what is causing the delay. Only Corona team have the tools for that.

Thanks,

Ok, I'm looking forward to see the test results.

Hi, we made several tests, but could not reproduce that difference between Edge and Point mode.
These are our results with one of the tests scenes (you can find it attached):

Edge Mode, Corona 1.7.2, 15 passes: 00:52
Point Mode, Corona 1.7.2, 15 passes: 00:45

Edge Mode, Corona 1.6.3, 15 passes: 00:55
Point Mode, Corona 1.6.3, 15 passes: 00:48

Edge mode is a bit slower but not much more. That's normal because Corona must render the hidden grass blades as transparent items.
Perhaps render time may higher using other materials, i don't know.

As said before, there is not much we can do, because rendering process is out of our control.
If the Corona team replies something new in their forum, please tell us.

Thanks,

Thanks for your reply Carlos, maybe the difference was higher with the green wall, as the geometry is more complicated than just grass blades.

Just wanted to post the end result, after using plants without any opacity maps, and setting up the edge mode to point.
I had to move some plants manually with the tree editor, but I'm quite pleased with the end result.
Looking forward to use Forest Pack again.
