Hello everyone,
Why the MAX crashed immediately when rendering the "card board" trees with fake shadows with Vraysun ?
Here's my screen shot of my scene and my forest material in slate editor.
Here's the minidump file generated when the MAX crashed in rendering.

But it rendered normally when I turn of the fake shadows.

Was there anything wrong in my setting of the material or the forest object ?
The MAX windows closed so fast that I couldn't even take a screenshot of the CRASHING WINDOW.

Hi,

Sorry to hear you're facing those troubles. At first sight, there's nothing wrong with your set-up and all should be working correctly (and upon our internal tests it is). We're running some more internal test here, but up to now we can't reproduce your troubles.

Unfortunately, the generated minidump it doesn't clear at all. The error is produced inside of the V-Ray renderer, but we can't trace it down completely and I'm afraid we can't do much more in this case (like debug the rendering process).

Let me point out, that we always recommend to use the latest version released as we've already fixed some bugs and it might be something related to an already solved issue. Therefore I would advice you to proceed the installation of the latest Forest Pack version / try to upgrade to a newer V-Ray version to check if there is any difference.

Best regards,

Thanks for your advice.
I know the newer is better. But we have difficulties.
Here's my scene. Can you find out what caused the problem ?

Please test my scene in MAX2012 x64 and below Vray 2.5.

Hi, we have identified the problem. It's caused by a rare condition of V-Ray, which was returning null in one of the raycaster's values.
This condition was not checked by Forest and crashed.

We could not identify why this happens only in your scene. Our tests here using similar scenes render fine.
Perhaps there is something different in the render settings or something else, no idea.

In any case, fix was easy. We were working today to release a beta update, so we taken the opportunity to include the fix in Forest Pack Pro beta 5.1.3:

- Fixed rare crash in V-Ray with Fake Shadows.

Did you mean my scene must be rendered normally if I upgrade my Forest pro Pack to "Forest Pack Pro beta 5.1.3" ?
Do you have any workaround (recreate the forest in my scene or something else) to render normally if I haven't enough time to purchase latest version ?

- The update fixes this specific crash. In our tests using it, your scene renders fine. But we cannot know it other problems would appear further on.
- No, sorry. We could not find why your scene causes that behaviour. Perhaps there is something related with render settings, materials or something else. I don't know.

Please note that if you dedice to ugrade your license, it's not possible to revert back. We don't accept refunds for renewals.

Thanks.

Thanks for your advice.
If you can render my scene normally, can you save my scene and put back the scene file as attachment you saved for me ?
I hope I can try to render the scene that you opened and saved.

And, May I ask which version of Vray you used in your test ?

(MAX2012 x64|Vray 2.4)
Many thanks.

I'm afraid it will not be any difference resaving the scene. It renders normally because the fix we added to FP 5.1.3, but it will crash again with FP 4.4.1.

I used V-Ray 2.40.04 for the test, but problem was identical in V-Ray 3. The patch worked for both.
