help!!! forest with in a forest
« on: August 08, 2014, 12:13:42 AM »
hi
i'm using a forest object with in a forest object
The nested forest object the forest color material it isn't randomizing

in the image
the box and the teapot and the tourus are the orginals
the  next to over are the nested forest objects and the color is randomized nicely
the objects in the back aren't

is there a way to do this?

It can be done using Map/Tint by Element. In your scene, the "house" material uses it, but "tree" material is on Item mode.

If you want to randomize complete items, but not elements parts, then it's not possible because internally nested objects are handled as a collapsed mesh. There is not reference to the original items.

Alternatively you would use groups instead nested. In this case, each object is scattered individually, but keeping the group disposition. To do it, just create a group and assign it to Forest selecting by name (picking doesn't work for groups).

my forest in a forest doesn't work with vray proxies....the nested forest renders the vrmesh funny.

No, proxies cannot be used with nested Forest objects. This configuration is not supported.

Why not replace the source in the Geometry rollout ? Just assign the group as Custom Object, instead the nested. Forest should keep the existing distribution.

it keeps the distribution, but not the updated group ( with the trees)

here is the file and you can see the geometry is pointing to the group but it's not updating.

Yes, i was now trying it. The procedure works for Generate mode, but not for Custom Edit. Unfortunately i don't see a way to do it easily.
Did you try the other solution ? (using Tint by Element)
