How you guys change colors on a lot of vegetation?
« on: May 15, 2016, 10:02:25 AM »
Hi,

I have several things:

1 - it would be great if we can change hue/saturation/lightness right in material rollout in Forest settings. It will be great time saver. And maybe min/max values would be great too.

2 - when add more objects in Forest and look in material, its in subobject material, which is ok. But is there any way how to easily find which subobject materials belong to some object? I have to make some tests to find which materials I look for and wanna change. So I wanna do simple task, only change some texture or something, but procedure is really time consuming. Or is there any way, am I missing something?

Go through all subobject materials and change Forest color maps is long time proces (and have to know, which wanna change, its not clear most of a time). So third question is:

3 - how you guys change colors of all grasses, bushes, flowers and trees in complex exterior scenes? When I simple add some of these objects in the scene (evermotion, etc...) they look good by itself, but together some are too saturated, too light, too dark and so on and I have to go through all of theme and correct. How you guys do this?

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

For these purposes, there is Tint Override feature available under the Forest Color map. Also, under Material - Color Tint you can find similar adjustments, but please note, that having Tint Override marked under used Forest Color map(s) this will always "override" these Material - Color Tint values.

There are several Blending Modes available. If you are familiar with the Composite map, these blending modes work in the same way. The default blending mode is set to Color, which is good to give a desired color tint to your material, but not very handy for brightening etc. For example: By setting the Random Strength from 25% to 25% and Blending Mode - Normal it'll produce same result as a Composite map with that layer in Normal mode and Opacity set to 25. Please feel free to experiment with it.

Regarding the material handling, I would suggest you to check following "general question about materials" post explaining Forest's material assignment work-flow. As mentioned there: "... as general rule, we suggest to leave "Consolidate Materials" on (which is the default value), and modify directly the materials assigned in Geometry->Materials, or from the source object if this parameter is not specified (for Custom Objects, if material is not specified, Forest uses the material assigned to the source object)."

As there is no unified system of materials / maps - any render engine has slightly different approach and any third-party vegetation models developer uses its own "material system", we have actually no plans to add another "Material Editor" as that'll overcomplicate it.

Hope that clears it up, but in case of any further question or doubt, please feel free to ask.

Best regards,

Hi,

thanks for reply.

I know Tint override and Forest map. I have a different problem. What I mean - in Material rollout we have only blending with color gradient or a map. All objects and textures blend the same way with same colors. But different grass objects has different textures with different hue/saturation/lightness. So I have to use Forest Color to make adjustments I want in every Forest map separately. Work with 10 different objects in one Forest is really dificult. I let Forest to add Forest map automatically, its ok. But then I have to change every Forest map manually, change colors in all maps differently to work this together.

I think it could be really handy if we have +- for hue/saturation/lightness right in material rollout. It will +- HSL  for every original texture in all objects, not handle all textures in once with same color gradient. I hope a express myself clearly.

And second thing - material assignment:  OK, I have consolidate materials on, so its better to change material right on objects, not on forest object, ok? And where are objects I add from library? Oh, its in forest template layer? I dont know why, I alway saw only plane templates. Its clear now. So If I change material on object in template layer, it will drive the forest object material, is this the right way?

Thanks a lot.
