Need to Stripe Grass (Mowing Lines)
« on: August 20, 2018, 08:57:22 PM »
I've found the following tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUIBzd2NOqY) and it works, but it makes the grass surface very bumpy and irregular.

I need to figure out a way to create stripes in the color of the grass without adding the bumpiness to the grass surface (essentially just a gradient overlay that sits on top of the forest distribution). Any ideas on how to do this?

Thanks!

Hi,
There is a Forest Color map for this. Use As texture on surface mode. Documentation reference

Hey Rokas, thanks for the response.  Looking at the documentation, this is exactly what I need.  I don't fully understand how to implement the stripes though.  Where do I need to put the ForestColor Map for this to work?  Do I still need to create the Gradient Ramp within the ForestColor or should I be looking for some sort of preset?

EDIT:  I've attached images of the grass in the viewport and the same grass in a render.  It looks like it should work in the viewport, but the render keeps coming out without the variation.

Try selecting "get color from map" not using it as a texture

Wanted to revive this topic and attach the test file as well as the precedent image.  I still haven't figured out how to make the Forest Color method work to achieve the desired result and I'm still not satisfied with the result I'm getting from using a Gradient Ramp in the X/Y Rotation in the Transform rollout.

I think that Forest Color is the solution, I'm just not sure what to do to get the results in place.

Thanks!

I get an error when I visit that page.  Maybe a broken link?

Weird.  It says "An Error Has Occured: The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you."

Same as the first link you posted.

Hi,

The only way I can see to do this at the moment that works with V-Ray RT is to use Planar from World XYZ mapping coordinate system. I prefer to use real world map size and then in that way you can easily position the texture using the bitmap map's Size and Offset parameters.

To see the results in the viewports you will probably need to turn on Display Realistic materials with Maps but to help get an approximate position I also find the the Surface's X position minus half its X size gives me a good starting point for the Width > Offset value, and a Y Position minus half the surfaces's Y Size works for the Height > Offset.

I hope that helps.

Many thanks!

Paul
