Title: Location of presets
Post by: CQ4419 on October 10, 2014, 01:06:41 PM
Hi
I'm using some new RealGrass grass fields and wanted to know where is saved the preset when I click on "Save current settings as preset"

I don't find it anywhere in my computer, when i want to click on "Import preset from an external file"...
Thanks a lot
Roland

Presets are stored here: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsmax\2014 - 64bit\ENU\en-US\plugcfg\forest_presets.ini

Anyway, this interface is obsolete and included only for compatibility. Instead, we suggest to save presets in the Library, as described here (http://docs.itoosoft.com/display/FORESTPACK/Editing+a+library#Editingalibrary-Tocreateanewpreset).

I know this procedure Carlos, but the problem is that there is 5 or 6 different objects in the scene.
As I see in 8 :
"A list will open containing the objects in the scene, pick a Forest object that you wish to use as a preset. A single max file can contain multiple objects, geometry and presets that be combined in a single external file without problems".
I can't select more than one objects and I don't understand how to "combined in a single external file without problems"...
What I found easy in the "Save current settings as preset" is that you can combine many models in a single preset and use it anytime, without having it in a library.
So i wait for a solution...
Thanks !

"combined in a single external file without problems" means that a single scene may contain multiple Forest objects, and use each one of them for a library preset. But not that multiple Forest may be combined in any way.

The General->Presets method is much more limited, because it doesn't save the models (Custom Objects) associated with the Forest object, only parameters and other settings. Instead, the library can load a complete Forest, including its custom objects.

I have a small area - 10m x 3m that I've filled with the Common Grass preset. With scene lights the rendering performance  is fine for a visualization of how it will look and the speed - two minutes and 11 seconds - is okay. When I introduce the mental ray daylight system, however, it's so slow that I can't really use it as it takes over an hour to render the same scene. Is there a way to make rendering faster using the mr daylight system or is this as good as it gets, which essentially means it's unusable for any serious work? I've attached the scene if anybody wants to have a look/try.

Hi,

Well, I'm not a mental ray expert, but switching the Sunlight Mode to Skylight: Illumination from FInal Gather (FG) might work for your scenario better than actually chosen IBL. Optionally, when using the Skylight: Illumination from IBL use the Opaque Shadow mode (to be honest I'm not sure, if there is any advantage of using that "Image Based Lightning" mode as you're using a procedural mr Physical Sky map in the Environment map and not a High Dynamic Range Image).

Feel free to double check by using the Forest Tools utility to export all scattered geometry to instances, that's not a Forest Pack related issue (you'll face longer render times even after that conversion to "standard Max's instances"). You can find it under Utilities - More ... - Forest Tools. For more information about it, check our on-line reference guide (http://docs.itoosoft.com/display/FORESTPACK/Forest+Tools).

Best regards,

Yeah, having the final gather set to IBL mode when you are rendering mental ray sky takes AAAGGES. Set it to use FG.

Also, turn off unified sampling - use classic raytrace if you aren't using motion bler or DOF. Especially for stills.
