Flickering trees
« on: July 11, 2012, 04:50:36 PM »
Hi

I´m working on a project of a medieval landscape with several geometry trees made with forest pro. I´m rendering with v-ray, with irradiance map as first GI engine  and Light cache as second.
(the animation can be view here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3180863/vray%20forest_test.mp4 )

I´ve got two questions.

1- How to avoid the flickering on the trees? When i use plane trees with diffuse and opacity maps this doesn't happen, but with hi-res geometry trees it does.

2 - I've tried to bake my 1350 frames animation with an interval render of 50 frames, in that phase the renders take about 5 minutes per frame. When i start to render the full animation, loading the previous saved *.vrmap file, the renders take about 10 minutes per frame. Any clue?

Thanks in advance.

Probably you must to increase the AA sampling to reduce the flickering. Sometimes is not possible to remove it completely, and is necessary to apply a filter in post production (as Noise & Grain -> Remove Grain of After Effects).

This is a typical problem when rendering very detailed objects (as trees). You can find some useful posts about this issue here (both for VRay and Mental Ray):

Are they stored locally or in a network share ?

Anyway, i would suggest you post this question in the VRay forum as well. They have more experience with these type of problems. If that helps, Forest doesn't modify or has access directly to the GI files, so in this case, this seems a purely VRay issue.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply.

They are stored locally. My guess is that in a model with a lot of geometry, as the *.vrmap file becomes bigger the render time increases. This doesn't happen in simple scenes.
I´m gonna follow your advice and check Vray forum as well.
