Title: Making Large Preset Meadow
Post by: MU3245 on February 21, 2018, 04:38:43 PM
I'm trying to make a large size preset of a meadow with grass and dandelions. I'm using 3 circular patches from CG Axis. I followed the process described in the tutorial here on the Itoo site.

It works but I can see the circular edge of some of the patches. I've tried adjusting the transform parameters and other things but this issue never goes away. any ideas on how I might mitigate this? Thanks in advance.

A small thumbnail I created for the preset is attached. You can see what I mean.

Hi,

Usually, making the “source patch object” no so regular helps a lot – you may even use just part of these objects and create your own patches with help of the Forest Pack plug-in – optionally, you can take advantage of the Density & Scale Falloff (https://docs.itoosoft.com/forestpack/forest-plugin/areas#Areas-Falloff) feature on borders to dissimulate a bit all these items. Also, preparing more samples from these three (mix them to get more variety) would help to have a more natural look.

Hope that helps a bit.

Best regards,

Thank you Michael. That is helpful. Cgaxis makes a lot of high quality stuff. I’m surprised they made all the grass patches in thier wild plants such regular circular shapes. For sure these are all intended to be scattered into larger areas.

I thought that was the main underlying problem, but did not think they would sell something that needed to be “fixed” to work correctly. Too bad, but not unusual.

Hi,

Also, I would suggest you check your Direction settings under the Surface tab (by default set to 100). In case of large, clumps I would recommend you to set it to Surface's Normal (0). Especially for these purposes, you can take advantage of Scale to fit sloped area option. You can find more about these setting in our on-line reference guide (http://docs.itoosoft.com/display/FORESTPACK/Surface#Surface-Direction).

Best regards,

Thank you Michael. Yes I am familiar with the normal and scale to slope parameters. I do have the normal set to zero for this. I did not use the scale to fit sloped area, not sure if that would help this case but will try.

Thanks again for your help, very much appreciated.
