material displacement problem
« on: April 17, 2012, 08:10:27 PM »
Is there any reason that material level displacement (using the Displace map in a Vray material) would not work in FPP object? I can see the displacement working fine on my source objects, but once they are scattered in a FPP object the displacement doesn't work.  I tried adding a VrayDisplace modifier to the source geo but that didn't seem to work either.

Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?

I discovered that switching from automatic geometry to meshes made displacement work - but the displacement amount is considerably different than on the base geometry.  Not really sure how to deal with that problem? Left is the source geo, right is a FPP object. Same material on both.

Unfortunately it seems a limitation of VRay; the proxies have the same problem. Probably the displacement at render time doesn't work on the render instances (both Forest and proxies use a similar technique).

There are some post in the ChaosGroup forum about this issue:

The "Meshes" mode creates a single object including all the geometry, so probably the displacement mapping is different from the base object. Also this mode is useful only using low-poly geometry; the size of the resulting mesh may be huge.

The only workaround seems to use the "Displace" modifier in the base object. In this way the displacement is applied to the geometry before rendering.

Thanks for the fast reply Carlos.

I tried the meshes mode but it is just too much geo and crashes Max. I will try the displace modifier route.  Thanks again!

p.s I bought Railclone recently - amazing piece of software, well done!
