Can't stack FP on surfaces in XY mode
« on: January 30, 2020, 03:22:14 AM »
Hi,

Apologies if this has been asked before - tried searching for hours but found no solution.

I am trying to scatter overhanging plants on Z-overlapping terraces in Image distribution mode. The reason I'm not using Path mode is because I need to use groups of plant types in clusters, which only Image mode can do.

The problem is the stacking gets disabled whenever I use:

1. Density falloff in the Areas rollout. This is easy enough to work around using an exclude spline.
2. Effects. Doesn't seem to matter what preset I use, as soon as I click Add Effect (before any effects exist), the stacking breaks.

Appreciate if you could shed any light on this.

Hi

In this case You can use Surface in UV mode. (It should have some UV coordinates, and best- randomized for each floor):

Hope this helps.

Hi Rokas, thanks for your reply.

Sorry I should have mentioned that I need to stay in XY surface mode in order to use the Look At Boundary effect. This is to ensure that the overhanging plants face outwards toward the edge of the boundaries.

Is there a way to make UV mode work with Effects?

You can adjust Alignment in UV editor. If Your geometry is curved, but Your UVs are straight FP items will follow the curve:

Thanks again Rokas. Thanks for the UVW mapping tip, it will be useful in the future. However in this case it is not practical; please see attached.

This is a large building with many terraces that snake around the facade. Not only would this be time consuming to UVW, the design is subject to changes which means I'll have to repeat the process more than once or twice.

The way it's set up now is fully parametric and allows for quick modifications; it's just the stacking that's not working. I know about exporting and importing presets; would there be now or in the future a way to link FP setups the way RC allows you to select a master style? Know any other workarounds, Rokas?

Dont use Unwrap. Just use classical UVW map and rotate it. See attached.
or edit poly/mesh and adjust UVW for element/face by UVW xForm.
