Fading Forest in and out

Hi,
is it possible to make the trees in forest transparent? I want to fade in the trees by animating the transparency in the object properties, but the trees pop in from one frame to the next.

The visibility option in object properties is interpreted differently depending on renderrer, and normally only acts as a on/off switch to hide geometry.

If you need to fade the trees, the best way to do it is animating the opacity levels in the material editor.
