Hi,
A surfaced created by the Edit Spline > CrossSection > Surface work-flow should work without any troubles (I've just done a quick test). Please double check the local axis orientation of such object (the Forest is building itself based on the local Z-axis orientation).
I would suggest to apply the Reset XForm utility over that surface to reset its local coordinates. That should fix it.
Best regards,

thank you for your answer. I already tested it with reset xform but nothing. Also I've checked your tutorial about vertical surfaces but I can't find a solution. Can I send you my simple test file for some check? Maybe I made a mistake with something.

Hi,
Thanks for the provided scene. It's related to inverted surface normals. To fix it, you can use the Flip Normals option within the Surface modifier (polygons should be facing upwards) or by using Edit Polygons - Flip. Attaching the modified scene.

you solved my problem, now it works ;D
thank you very much
