Title: Need help with Vray Proxy Objects
Post by: loydering on October 14, 2008, 06:19:10 PM
Alrighty.  So I've got a scene set up to use VRay proxies as my custom objects but I'm having some issues with display and renders.  The Vray Proxy was exported from and Onyx Tree object.  The display issue involves toggleing between "bounding box" and "preview from file" modes within the MeshProxy Display prameters.  In the Forest Pro Object, When I have the bounding box mode on for the proxy object, it displays as a box.  No problem there.  But when I render it out I get a scene full of beautiful boxes (which would be awesome if that's what I intended to do).  So, I thought that by setting the proxy object to preview from file mode, it would fix it.  You guessed it; only works in theory.  Instead of showing the preview objects, it reverts to planes and the distribution also changes.

Any suggestions?  Oh yeah: Max 2008 64x.  I have some attached screen caps below.

Hi,

You must use Forest Tools to convert the trees to instances of the proxy object:

You get only planes from Forest because the number total of faces exceeds the limit defined in "Display" rollout. But this is normal for the most of scenes that use VRay proxies, so Forest Tools is used to create a proxy by each tree before rendering the scene.

Is there the reverse of that tool so I can convert VRayProxy objects to an FP object?

Besides using Maxscript, you would use Creation Tools->Reference Object->Pivot Point, to create items based on the position, rotation and scale of the proxies.

Can I access the list of custom-placed instances? I couldn't find it by looking at the API exposed by using "show $".

You must use showinterfaces($):

http://itoosoft.com/forestpack/reference/install.php (http://itoosoft.com/forestpack/reference/install.php) (see Maxscript section)
